The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 was created to solve the problem of high crime. To deal with the crime problem in our nation, there must be a balance approach between getting tough on the hard-core violent offenders, and prevention and treatment for nonviolent offenders, all within the context of punishment. The major crimes that were going on in 1994 were the war on drugs, gun violence, and juvenile violence(book, pg.470). It was suggested that police pay more attention to low level crimes to prevent higher level crimes. The concept of police working with the community became the primary basis of the shift in policing practices. The police decided in order to take control of crime that they would have to start cracking down on minor crimes. This act was working and became a viable public policy on the national level.
Today minor crimes are not as big as an issue as higher crimes. The federal government is trying to focus more on crimes related to terrorism, the budget, and putting more cops on the street. I believe that although the government has a point to focus a great deal on terrorism there is still the matter of criminal activity that does not have to deal with terrorism like gun control, robberies, murder, sexual assault, the budget issues and policing. The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement seemed to have been a good way to prevent crime. Although crime has gone down in America it is still a topic of concern among many Americans. The problem today is still crime, however it is also the budget crisis and trying to put more police on the streets.
