Media such as the internet, newspaper and television have become society’s primary source for gaining knowledge about crime. The problem with getting information from the news per se is that they only report crimes which they deem serious according to society norms. Such news stories can include: dramatizations, personalization, titillation and conventionalism. Dramatization is often used to sensationalize violent crimes by using drama and provocative language to shock its viewers. Personalization is those crimes about a well-known offender or victim where the media uses to draw more attention from society. Titillation in media is used to peak the excitement in society especially media with sexually suggestive images or wording; in this case the media will focus more on sex crimes. Lastly, conventionalism is used by the media to report crimes that are easy to understand. For example, the media often reports about violent crimes such as murder, assault rather than white collar crimes or business fraud. By only reporting newsworthy crimes, the media only portrays crime as being violent. Most people fear that they are at a higher risk of being victimized because media makes them believe so.
