Crime Mapping
Crime Mapping
Definition of crime mapping. Crime mapping is an important tool that is used by analysts to find where crimes occur the most and to analyze that area for possible suspects. The analysts wait for a crime to take place, and then mark a precise point on a map for every incidence that occurs. After they get enough points to tell where the area is where these crimes have taken place, the analysts can identify main crime hotspots, trends, and patterns.
Solving crimes with crime mapping. The best way that crime mapping can be used to help solve crime is by having analysts relay the information that they find from the data to officers around that area. This would then allow police more knowledge on where they could provide more backup and certain types of areas that they should pay more attention to. For example, there were many incidents that occurred in a certain county in Illinois. Authorities used crime mapping to see if there were any similarities in the incidences, and found that all of the crimes occurred near major highways in the area. After discovering this lead, police guessed that a group that traveled and specialized in burglaries was committing the crimes. There were also crimes that took place around cemeteries. More patrols watched over these types of places, and eventually the criminals were arrested. The group was called the Irish Travelers and after their arrests, a lot less crimes took place in the before crime-ridden area.
Invasion of privacy involved with crime mapping. Crime mapping could be considered an invasion of privacy, but also could be looked at completely different. In the eyes of the victim, they may be embarrassed about what happened and do not want anyone extra to know what went on. For authorities, it may be the main piece of information tat they need to acquire to be able to catch the criminal. People still deserve their privacy, though, and I think that it should have to be agreed on by the victim to use the

The purpose of the major crime-reporting programs is to provide an overview of criminal activity. These programs seek to gain information about the frequency of crimes being committed, the victims impacted by such crimes, and also the type of crime committed. When these programs are used successfully an accurate picture of crime (through statistics) can be presented, therefore allowing such programs to aid lawmakers and other government officials. Such statistics aid in creating crime control programs, planning laws, and also give an idea as to what budget needs set forth for these things. To consider a crime-reporting program successful in the United States, the program would need to present an accurate picture of crimes. Unfortunately, this can be hard to accomplish. Reasons such programs face problems is because not all agencies report crimes the same way, if multiple crimes are committed only the most serious may be listed, some victims do not report crimes, or a crime may be reported as cleared when it has not been solved to name a few examples. For these programs to have real success, departments throughout the United States would need to work together to set standards for how and what is reported.…

Geographical profiling is defined as a method for evaluating locations connected to a crime in order to identify the probable area of an offender’s home location, place of work, or other relevant locations based off of nomothetic data and assumptions (Turvey, 2012). Dr. Darcy Kim Rossmo, a Canadian criminologist, is accredited for his influence on geographical profiling. Rossmo concluded in his research that offender’s geographical correlation to a crime is routinely based on offender residence, workplace and leisure activity (2012). Based on this theory, the Vancouver Police Department launched it’s first Geographic-Profiling Section in 1995. Since its establishment several agencies world wide, including the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), have enlisted assistance from the Geographic-Profiling Section at the Vancouver Police Department to aid in their investigations.…

Quite simply, problem-oriented policing aims at reducing and removing the elements that cause crime rather than dedicating a large number of resources to respond to crimes. Comparatively, it is the equivalent of stitching up a deep flesh wound rather than simply putting a Band-Aid on it. Problem-oriented policing is implemented in four different stages. First, data is scanned to determine a pattern in routine incidents. Once analysis is complete, the data is analyzed to determine any linking, or unique factors. After the data has been gathered and analyzed, tactics are changed to disrupt the normal chain of events in the criminal activity, or otherwise prevent instances of the crime’s occurrence. Sometimes, in order to decrease the instances of one crime occurring, numerous other interventions must be taken. Lastly, more data is gathered in order to determine the efficiency of the program, and the overall effectiveness of the interventions…

In the late 1920’s the idea was recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police or most commonly known as the (IACP), that there needed to be a more reliable and accurate way to keep track of all of the crime data and statistics. This information was needed to determine the crimes that were changing from year to year as well as the sources of what could be changing these statistics such as population changes, poverty changes, and so on and so forth. After a few years of deliberation over the record-keeping practices being used at the time, planning for a system called the Uniform Crime Report program (UCR) in which it came in to working effect in 1929. It was in 1930 a year later, in January that the United States Congress enacted a Code that gave the UCR the authority by the attorney general to gather information about crimes. The attorney general then delegated the responsibility to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to act as the bookkeepers for collecting all the crime data for the UCR. In 1930 the FBI became the first agency to start a resource to do just that. Since the beginning of the UCR program every year new data has been collected and published in order to crime statistics for each area across the United States. Information stored would include numbers of different crimes such as murders, arson, burglary, property crimes, rapes, larceny, etc. The UCR program started in January 1930 with data gathered from law enforcement agencies in 400 cities from 43 states submitting information and currently includes approximately 17,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide that voluntarily contribute their crime statistics.…

This module will examine the importance of criminal data and its effect on the criminal justice system. For instance, is it important for a law enforcement agency to evaluate the crimes occurring in their city or jurisdiction? Is it important for citizens to know how safe is the area in which they live? If so, how is that information gathered and disseminated to the general public? How does the law enforcement component of the criminal justice system use the information to reduce crime or even predict it in the future? With the advent of applicable technology, law enforcement agencies and criminologists are now examining crime patterns, suspect information, as well as date and time of crimes in an effort to predict probable occurrences and locations of future crimes.…

Unfortunately, all of the primary methods of collecting crime data experience inherent flaws, either in the attributes data collected, or the methodology for collecting data. Ideally, a centralized database combining quantitative, qualitative, and geographic attributes would provide the best measure of statistical analysis relating to crime. However, this is near impossible to accomplish, as crime definitions vary from state to state, and there is standardized methodology for local law enforcements with regard to reporting crime (Fagin, 2016).…
