Abstract

As crime scenes investigators, there are many different types of death that are investigated day in and day out. Some deaths are classified as natural, undetermined, accidental, suicidal or murder. Depending on the scene and classification, investigators will know how to handle each case. Also depending on the jurisdiction, the cases are investigated by medical examiners, medical examiner investigators or even special units dedicated for specific cases. This paper will explain the different types of deaths, how they are investigated and how they are caused.

Natural death by natural is a loosely defined term used by coroners to describe death when the cause was from a disease and there are no signs of violence, drug abuse or suicide. It is also classified as a natural death when the cause is unknown and/or the death is a result of illness .
What are causes of natural death?
Causes of natural death may vary. Cancer is common, but there is also heart failure, incurable illness, untreated medical condition, sudden deaths, death in sleep, congenital anomalies, genetic disorders (such as cystic fibrosis), and cerebral problems. There are other causes of natural death including old age. Death from natural causes is the second leading cause of mortality in children over one year of age, following accidental death.

How are they investigated?
They are investigated by a Medical Examiner (ME) or the Medical Examiner Investigator (MEI). The MEI conduct their own investigation to include investigating but not limited to past medical history, hospital history, medications, what was the victim attitude and whether or not the death was consistent with the medical condition. Home Accidents
These deaths are caused in the home whether is by working in a garage or faulty home equipment.

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA)-
Death caused by one or more motor vehicle colliding with an object, vehicle or person.
There are a few types of MVA; head on collision, sideswipe, single-vehicle smash-up, full car rollover, hitting a pedestrian, spontaneous combustion and other not mentioned.

Suicides
What is suicide?
Is the act of an individual intentionally causing his or her own death.
What are causes of suicide?
Cause of suicide is usually mental and emotional. That comes from despair, mental disorder which includes depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism and drug abuse, financial difficulties, and but not limited to interpersonal relationships .
Types of suicide committed? There are many different ways to commit suicide, the following list is not all inclusive but are usually the most common.
Hanging-
These types involve a ligature device placed around the neck with the intent to cut off oxygen and /or blood to the brain.
Intentional fall from height-
The victim jump from a high place with the intent to die.
