Is suicide the only way to get out of hard times in life? What about your family and friends, how do you think they will feel about suicide? Are you feeling trap and don’t want to feel that way? In the book Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone, Haemon, and Eurydice committed suicide because Creon who is the ruler didn’t think before doing things. They felt trap. Suicide is a mental illness, so there are three important things about suicide that we need to learn and they are signs and risk factors, rates in different age groups and ways to help prevent suicide. Suicide is people who kill themselves showing one or several warning signs either saying things or doing things. If you have more than one warning sign, you have higher chances of suicide. If a person says “I have no reason to live” or “I don’t belong in this world”, they’re giving you hints. Finding revenge, feeling trapped, feeling hopeless and worthless those are warning signs to suicide. For example, Antigone, Haemon and Eurydice all felt like they were trapped
because they would have to deal with Creon’s behavior and that was the way out. Antigone was going to be sentenced for life and she thought there was no point living so she hung herself with a rope. Haemon committed because he lost his fiancé and was angry at Creon for not listening to him and being selfish. We if you see someone drinking and doing drugs more than usual, have bad dangerous anger, not sleeping for days, stop playing their activities, give away possessions, self harm or are failing to take care of them, step in and stop them. That’s when you need to worry and help them stop. Be there with them and take it seriously. There are several factors that you should be aware of and they are, medical factors, historical factors, access to lethal, stress, and relationships that you should be aware of. The medical factors are mental health problems and alcohol and drug abuse. Historical factors are serious because of previous suicide attempts and family history of suicide attempts. According to American Foundation for suicide prevention, In 2011, the age group who had highest rate was 45 to 64 years old. Their rate was 18.6. The second who had the highest rate was 85 years and older. Thiers is 16.9. “Those who died by suicide in 2011, 78.5% were male and 21.5% were female.” (American Foundation, 9) Any ages below age 45 had lower rates. A lot of males tend to commit suicide more than women. There are many ways to prevent suicide.
One way to prevent suicide is to learn about all the suicide signs. Learn about each and every single sign to prevent suicide. Don’t hesitate to talk to your friends or parents about suicide. “Never keep secret a friend's suicidal plans or thoughts.” (Nasp resources, #2) Talking to an adult such as parents and counselors, is the best way to talk about your issues and thoughts of suicide because they will be the one understanding it and they will help you improve to be positive and not think like that. Go to counseling if needed, but also talk to others and listen to their story and learn what they go through. Never isolate yourself from anybody your close with. If you are going through depression, you need to treat it and etc. Therapy will always help you prevent from suicide. When Antigone, Haemon, and Eurydice committed, this could have been prevented if Creon had reasons why Antigone should be in a
cave. Don’t let yourself get trapped in life or get depressed. If you need help, don’t hesitate and talk to adults because you can get help that way. If you’re having a hard time, take a deep breath and think things through because you have a future ahead of you. There are many signs that you should have learned to be aware of. Let’s try to limit the rates of suicide and help prevent suicide. Help others and stand up!
