Problem One On Sunday, March 16th, 2014, the Crimean population voted, overwhelmingly to join the Russian Federation. On March 17th President Vladimir Putin of Russia, stated that “in the hearts and minds of people, Crimea has always been and remains an inseparable part of Russia." He then announced new laws for the Crimea to join the Russian Federation. (www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26630062) Assume that there is a debate in the UN Security Council on a resolution stating that a) The Crimean election was flawed and b) Russia’s response to the Crimean declaration of sovereignty and the “agreement formalizing the region 's absorption into Russia” was a breach of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Ukraine. The Crimean Crisis
The Crimean crisis concerning Russia and Ukraine has generated mixed reactions at the international arena. The turmoil begun after the Ukrainian Revolution that led to the impeachment of the country’s president in February 2014. Instantaneously, a new government headed by Yatsenyuk was formed. This administration received acknowledgment from the western nations while Russia never recognized it. Moscow asserted that President Yanukovich was impeached unlawfully. As a result, the pro-Russian forces moved to take charge in the Crimean Peninsula. By 24th March 2014, the forces had occupied most of the military bases in the Crimea. As a result, the Ukrainian forces pulled out of the Peninsula. This was followed by the calls for a referendum to determine the Crimean secession from Ukraine. The results from the referendum indicated that about 96 percent of the citizens voted for secession. Nonetheless, the western nations led by the US and France maintained that the referendum was unconstitutional. On March 17, the Crimean parliament affirmed their independence and
