Criminology: My thoughts and Ideas as a Student

CRIMINOLOGY, This term was coined by Mr. Raffaele Gorafalo in 1885, which is Criminologia in Italian. Then it was soon introduced by Mr. Paul Topinard, (A French anthropologist) in English Language in 1889, from the French word criminologie. derived from the Latin word crimen, which can be translated to “offense”.
Criminology is not just a course to be taken for you to look cool, manly, or whatever you think you look like when you do. It’s not just a word that has “crime” as its root. Not just a study that can be taken for a year. And especially, it’s never a joke to be fooled around. Criminology is something serious, especially to us, Criminology students. It is the study of criminals, Criminal behavior and its causes. It has a lot of science involved in it. It is connected to our society. It can be a source of philosophy in life and It do have goals. Criminology is our life. Now let us talk about criminology and everything about it.
The study of criminals, Criminal behavior and its causes. This is the main definition of criminology. But before you enter the world of criminology and before you study and memorize the terms connected into it, you must know the reasons on why we need to study everything about this. Is this really important? Why bother to study crimes and criminals? What is the main reason about this? Let me answer that. Criminology is being studied for the criminals to be understood and for them to be controlled. Why do we need to have a study about them? because we need to know and understand their reasons for us to be able to control and prevent it. Well, you already get the idea, Second is to develop an understanding of justice. Our understanding of justice will expand when we studied about criminology, Knowing about the laws and everything involved in it. We also study about this to prepare for a career in life. Criminology is a profession, so if you do believe that your future career is somehow connected to criminology and its importance, (a police officer is a good example) then it is better if you already start studying about it.

Criminology is not a joke. It’s not as easy as how you read it.
1. Criminology has a lot of science involved in it because Criminology is an applied science. It involves natural science to study the causes of the crimes. Chemistry, Medicine and physics are usually used for crime detection and investigation. To explain further, there is a sub-field of criminology, known as “criminalistics” or the study of criminal things. Wherein we involve the science/s that I’ve been talking about: Chemistry, psychiatry and Biology to identify, locate, collect, process and evaluate physical evidences, Forensic science to be exact.

2.Criminology is connected to our society simply because criminology is a social science. Crime is a creation of the society. The criminals, violators, offenders, delinquents and also the victims are involved in the community so we use social science in understanding and studying criminology because we study about something occuring and existing in the society. But then again a society without crime is impossible. We cannot terminate crime, we can just lessen it and control it as far as we can. And that’s one of the purpose of studying criminology.

3.Criminology has goals. Its main goal is to end brutality and inequality against criminals by enforcing limitation on government power. Moreover,
Criminology is our life. Detecting crimes, understanding criminals, investigating crime scenes, knowing the Pillars of Criminal Justice System, understanding the legal responsibilities, this is a criminologist’s life. And this is the path we chose to take.
