Critical Reflection
ABC Financial is one of the top competitors within the financial retirement industry. However, since the financial industry is quite complex and requires constant implementation of innovative systems, procedures, and products, there is an increased demand on employees to meet expectations from different segments of the organization. With approximately 5000 U.S. employees spread across eight different segments of the business, it is vital to create an environment conducive to innovation. The current creative environment at ABC Financial is fragmented and dependent on the segment of the business. This, in turn, has identified both successful implementation of creative programs and potential growth opportunities for optimal results.
Leadership Influence
ABC Financial’s organization structure consists of an executive team, leadership team, and various employees with different specialties spread across the United States. The structure is broken down by the eight different segments of the business based on product or service type, and each segment consists of two levels of executives and two or more levels of leadership members. However, there are still executives and leaders that believe all ideas should stem from their groups and tend to dictate the different change mandates instead of eliciting creative contributions from all employees. This thought process often neglects the needs of the employees and establishes barriers due to a lack of meaning. Per Seligman (Ted Conferences, 2004), a meaningful life would be needed to champion happiness and happiness is known to encourage creativity according to Hallowell (2011).     While this culture is beneficial to low cost strategy in the short run, a culture that emphasizes innovation is essential in the long run for product development. Overall, the strong competitive culture creates a situation in which employees do not express creative ideas because the cost of doing so it too high.
