1. Introduction
“Death ends a life, not a relationship”, a quote taken from Tuesdays With Morrie, p. 83.
The past year has been a very difficult one for my family and I, as my Grandmother passed away. Being very close to her, this departure was an extremely sad one. In the months following her passing my Mother had suggested that I read a book, titled Tuesdays With Morrie, as it had always been a favourite book of hers, and it’s theme was appropriate for the particular phase of my life. I came to therouly enjoy this book, leading me to chose it for this paper.
Tuesdays With Morrie is written by a man named Mitch Albom. Albom is an internationally renowned and best-selling author, radio and television broadcaster, musician, journalist, playwright and screenwriter. He majored in and obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1979 at Brandeis University in Waltham, Masscachusetts. After becoming a full-time writer and moving to Detroit in 1985, he became a nationally acclaimed sports journalist. Albom married in 1995, the same year he re-encountered his former college professor, Morrie Shwartz, who was dying of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). His frequent visits with Morrie would later lead to the book Tuesdays With Morrie.
2. Summary
Tuesdays Wit Morrie is a true story about two old friends re-connecting at the end of ones life. Recalling his graduation from university, Albom who is the narrator of the book, distinctly remembers his favourite professor, Morrie Shwartz, and how he promised him he would stay in touch. After a few difficult years of trying to make it in the music industry, Albom turned to writing, later becoming extremely successful in this line of work. With success came a lot of money and material things.
