Playing the lottery I work in the BP gas station near Short Pump Mall and before I took the job, I thought that playing the lottery wasn’t a waste of money. Unfortunately, after two years at this job, I have come to realize just how terrible and unhealthy gambling is and have since changed my opinion on this issue. Let me tell you, nothing good comes from playing the lottery. Most gamblers are arrogant, cheap, greedy, stupid, lazy and selfish. Playing the lottery is not a hobby; people claim that they play lottery for fun. However to these people, playing the lottery is serious business, not entertainment, because they would rather win their money than work for it. Thus, in my opinion, playing the lottery is an unhealthy activity and a waste of money.
Playing the lottery is an addiction. Lottery players indulge in a fantasies about what could be done with the prize money. Lloyd R. Cohen, in his article lure of the lottery, said, “This lure of the lottery makes lottery tickets not a monetary investment but rather a trigger for daydreams, a vehicle for the momentary escape from reality.” lure of the lottery, Wake Forest Law Review, 2001. I remember the first time I saw some people winning, so I thought I’d take the chance that I might win. I was thinking that if I didn’t win the lottery, I’d stop. After the couple of failures, I didn’t loose my hope to win; but instead I spent hundreds of dollars. Even when I didn’t win, my mind was telling me to play one more time. I realized I’m addicted to the lottery. Playing the lottery gives people a hope of winning, thus make people play more and more. And the worst part is, these people do not learn from their mistakes! They just keep doing it and doing and doing it and learn nothing from previous experiences! I see it everyday at work.
