An issue came up at work where female inmates kept telling officers they were not receiving all items (e.g. nightgown, socks, underwear, etc.) when they were being in-processed at the prison. The situation went so far that instead of being one to two individuals saying they didn't have an item the whole section (approximately ten to twenty people) didn't receive an item. This situation continued for a few months with no resolution. The only solution we had come up with was to search each cell to verify whether or not the inmate did or did not receive the item. Searching each room is extremely time consuming, especially when searching up to twenty rooms a day. This solution was difficult to enforce when an officer has so many other responsibilities to do throughout the day. Finally after several months I found a way to track what each inmate was receiving as I processed them into the prison. I started to notate in their individual files what they received, the sizes of their clothing, and how much they received of each item. The inmate is informed and made aware that they are responsible for their belongings. If they are lost, sold, or destroyed then the inmate is responsible for replacing the item.
