What evidence do you see of human impact on erosion?
Humans are also impacting erosion by: the many recreational activities along the beach (e.g. horse riding and four-wheel driving places on large dune areas.), the rising population of Cronulla’s population and the doubled amount of people visiting the Cronulla Coast during the holidays.
These factors place pressure upon the infrastructure and coastal environment, which can make large dune areas and beaches more exposed to erosion.
Are humans impacting water quality at Cronulla?
During my fieldtrip day at Cronulla, I visited Gunnamatta Bay to test the water quality. My observations were that t the water was clear, but it was
evident that there were bits of human rubbish buried or floating in the water.
I performed a nitrate test and there was a reading of less than 5ppm of nitrate in the vial sample. This proved that there isn’t an excess of weed or/and algae in the water.
I then proceeded to do the phosphate, which came to the result of 1ppm of phosphate that indicates that the water quality is excellent. This concludes that there is a very low level of human or animal waste, or industrial pollution.
The pH test is meant to measure how much pH there is in the water, which shows how much acid there is which is usually by industrial that can kill the ecosystem. The level of 7.5pH suggests the water quality is excellent.
Overall, humans are not impacting the water quality of Gunnamatta Bay was excellent very much except a few remains of rubbish. Though, if it had been a storm day, the results could’ve been different.
