Many themes were portrayed throughout the novella, Of Mice and Men. Loneliness was a major theme present in many of the character’s emotions and actions. Throughout the novel, seclusions from other characters played a key role in demonstrating this theme. Other factors such as race, gender, and age may evoke the development of being ignored. Crooks, known as “stable buck”, was an African American man who was racially segregated by most. The setting of the novel was told during the Great Depression, a time when racial discrimination was common. Because of the time period, Crooks faced prejudice treatment by the white workers and suffered the feeling of loneliness. This feature was shown when the favored men of the ranch …show more content…
This sign of eagerness mislead others into believing she was a “tart”. Many stayed away from her in hopes of not being knocked around by Curley or even worse getting “canned”. In a way, Curley wanted to protect her but was never willing to provide to her needs. Because of this lack of comfort, Curley’s wife also spoke to George. When speaking to him, she admits that she is very lonely and only stays with Curley because her past dreams didn't come true. As the story unfolds, she begins to grow on Lennie and tries to relate to his strange behaviors in reason to feel a connection. Age is an obstacle the character Candy faced in Of Mice and Men. This factor challenged Candy to fit in with the other men. The closest thing to friendship Candy possessed was the bond him and his dog shared. But this friendship didn't last because Carlson continuously complained about the odor produced by the dog. He pressured Candy into putting the dog “out of his misery” and evidentially shot the dog himself. After the passing of his dog, Candy became emotionally depressed. In literature, many themes are present to formulate stories. Of Mice and Men, for example, created the different themes of dreams, innocence, etc. But, the one theme that was most important to this novella, was loneliness. Throughout this story, several characters at one point, felt alone. Mainly Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s wife were always left in the

Loneliness is presented in ‘of mice and men,’ in many ubiquitous forms. 2 characters, who are overly dominant in the world of loneliness, are George and Crooks. ‘We are the loneliest guys in the world.’ As this statement is said, the audience is under realisation of the true meaning behind the novella. As well as personal loneliness, there are forms of physical loneliness, such as the setting of the book, which takes place in a town, known as ‘Soledad,’ which ironically enough, is the Spanish word for ‘Solitude.’ The existence of loneliness outlines the engagements of the assorted characters in the book.…

In 'Of Mice and Men', John Steinbeck includes a character, Crooks, as a stereotype of black people in the Great Depression; proud, bitter, and very sarcastic. Crooks is also extremely pessimistic and cold-hearted, due to the way people had been treating him all his life. Steinbeck portrays many of his characters lonely and isolated. Just as Candy's age and handicap isolate him, and Curley's wife's being a female makes her life solitary, Crooks's race is the main reason for his isolation. Because of his race, he is discriminated and must live in a separate room (a shed), away from everyone else. Steinbeck revolves all of Chapter 4 around Crooks so that he could convey Crooks loneliness and isolation.…

We know this because Steinbeck says “long box filled with straw” this says that he sleeps in a shed at the side of the barn, and in this shed where crooks sleeps is also were the medicine and food for both him and the horses is kept. Racism was a big thing during the depression. We think crooks is a character used by Steinbeck to show the effects of discrimination. He was separated from the other workers because of his race. “had his bunk in the harness room” this proves that he was treated differently.…

Companionship is a necessity for those seeking happiness and peace of mind within their lives. Without any faith in others, people will suffer from loneliness and sorrow. This idea is presented in the novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. The text delineates the lives of multiple characters who have experienced pain as a result of their alienation from others. These characters include a black man, named Crook’s, who is separated from society because of his skin color, Curley’s wife who, in the time period, was treated with disrespect because of her gender, and two itinerant farm laborers, George and Lennie, once the best of friends, who have lost each other in a world of fear and misfortune. This concept of isolation is developed through…

She is lonely and Curley doesn’t allow her to talk to anyone except him. Imagine being lonely without having anyone to talk to. For example, she tells Lennie, “I get lonely,” she said. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How’d you like not talking to anybody?” (87). Also, the men from the ranch always have something negative about her. For example, when George & Lennie first come to work, she goes and meets them. As soon as she leaves, George says, “Don’t you even take a look at that bitch. I don’t care what she says and what she does. I seen ‘em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her. You leave her be” (32). Curley’s Wife deserves sympathy because she had no reason to die. Lennie accidentally kills her in the story. In the book, it says, “..and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.” ( 91). Curley’s Wife is pitiful, but Lennie is most…

With these words, Crooks, a character from Of Mice and Men, demonstrates his pride for being the son of a landowner instead of a slave of the South. However, this pride is merely a small comfort, as living in California does not liberate Crooks from the clutches of racial prejudice. During the Great Depression, the era in which the story is set, African-Americans afflicted by economic inequality further suffered from the racist and bigoted opinions of society. John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men depicts Crooks, an African-American farm worker, as a man threatened by the racism of the 1930s. Steinbeck describes the effects of discrimination on Crooks, including his loneliness, crushed aspirations, and bitter attitude, to illustrate the hopelessly bleak situation for African-Americans during the Great Depression.…

There are several themes present in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, among them powerlessness and the impossibility of the American dream. Although these two themes definitely make up a fair portion of the story, they are not the subject of this paper. Nay, for standing prominently alongside these themes is loneliness, which is indisputably one of the most major concepts explored in the duration of the story. The theme of loneliness is thoroughly fleshed out through both characters – specifically Lennie and Curley's wife – and the involvement of migrant workers in general.…
