How Being a Member of An Athletic Team Has Helped Me Grow As a Person
Being on an athletic team is one of the greatest honors I have ever had. Athletic teams influence people across the world in countless ways every day. But for me, being on an athletic team has influenced who I am as a person. During my four years at Commack High School I have been involved in various clubs and organizations, but none have benefited me the way that being on a sports team has. I have learned countless lessons, not only about what moves to make on the field or track, but some of the most valuable life lessons someone can learn. I have learned trust and teamwork, patience, discipline, and confidence. Each of these traits is what allows us to grow, and will stick with each of us for the rest of our lives.
I have been on three athletic teams since my freshman year. I run cross-country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and play lacrosse in the spring. Each of these sports has taught me something that has helped me grow as a person. On the lacrosse field, players are constantly moving, the ball moving from one stick to the other every second. You must rely on each of your teammate’s movements and trust them to know their roles in the game plan. If someone gives you a bad pass or makes a bad cut, you have to keep sprinting and fighting for the ball. You cannot lash out on one of your teammates for making a mistake, no matter how many times it has been made. You must remain calm and pick up any slack, otherwise the chemistry of teamwork on the field would fall apart. Give the person time to correct any mistakes they have made instead of reminding them of what they did, because they probably already feel bad about it. You have to endure what someone has done and forgive.
