Cross Country Personal
Sports have always been a passion of mine ever since I was two and I was learning how to ski. Ever since then I have loved being outdoors and playing sports with my friends and family. Exercising for me has always been a way for me to relive stress, forget about my worries, and have fun with my family and friends. I have participated in any and every sport I had the opportunity to throughout grade school and my high school career, and I have been a varsity athlete for the last three years of high school. No matter the time of year I will always be playing a sport whether it is beach volleyball in the summer, running cross country in the fall, or playing ice hockey in the winter, I am always competing. I want to take this into my career …show more content…
I do not remember my first season that well, but I do remember thinking that I did not plan on running cross country ever again. When next year came around I decided to play soccer, and I played soccer until my sophomore year when I started to lose interest in the sport. When my junior year came around I thought I might as well try cross country again. I did not have that many friends who ran cross country, but I did get one of my friends to try it with me. Ever since that decision I have loved running cross country, and I wish I never gave it up in fifth grade. I have made many new friends, and accomplished goals I did not believe I was capable of accomplishing. For instance, I never thought I would be able to run a three mile race in under 19:30, however this past season I beat my goal and ran my best three mile ever in 19:26. This experience taught me that if I list my goals out and put in the effort with no excuses, I will be able to achieve my goals. I will use this lesson all throughout my studies and use it to help achieve my goals in my …show more content…
This has helped me become even more competitive and active during the winter months. Every night my brother and I played one on one in ice hockey, and since he is five years older than me I lost more often than I won. However, I never liked losing to him, so I did my best to practice until eventually I started to win as well. Now, when we play during the winter the outcome is more fifty fifty, and whoever loses the game gets extremely upset and disappointed. My brother and I have always been competitive, but since we are family it is unacceptable to lose to one another. This experience helped me become more athletic and taught me that you cannot just wish for something to happen you need to have the determination and the heart to get the make a difference in the outcome. The ice rink in our backyard has also helped me become more active during the winter months. Winter is a time where most people just stay inside because it is too cold and it is hard to exercise. This has never been a problem for my family. Although we always have a week long ski trip to the mountains in Colorado, if we did not build the ice rink the rest of our winter would be just sitting around and waiting for spring. However, since we built an ice rink every year, as a family we were constantly outside exercising while bonding as a family. This has always been an awesome part of my childhood and

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

It was just two weeks until school. And cross country practice started. The practices were hard at first but then the got a little bit easier. And time trials came. I was not looking forward to it, but when it came I was like “this is easy.” When school came, the cross country meets came, too. Boy are the meets fun! They were getting harder and harder at every meet and once I had to run two miles around a golf course. The abs workouts are hard still today, it helps me with other sports like soccer.…

There were many times I wanted to quit or give up but I didn’t even though I really wanted to at points. I remember the last three meets, they were the best. They were in Shenandoah, Atlantic, then Clarinda. Shenandoah was my favorite course i'm not sure why maybe it was the trees and the paths we had to run of were fun, it was shady most of the places and filled with plants and trees on a dirt path. At Atlantic it was pouring rain all day and when it came time for the middle schoolers to run it was muddy and people were falling at the start, everyone got super muddy and wet. Then in Clarida it was the last meet and I was super nervous right when we got there I knew it was gonna be hard. When we walked part of the course there were corn fields and trees on the outside of it. When we got up to the start I was nervous I said I saw scared for the other ones well this one was 10 times worse but the gun went off and we ran and finished, then it was over. The season went fast, it was long but fast at the same time. It was fun scary, hard, but…

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

Athletics has been an integral component of my entire life. While never being the most athletic or skilled, baseball was my passion growing up. The sport served as a garden for me to grow as a person, learn invaluable lessons, and gain friendships that will last a lifetime. After years of playing year-round, I was blessed to have the option of playing at a couple Small Division II schools or pursue a more academically rigorous degree at UVa. Ultimately, I chose the latter and it has been at the University of Virginia where CrossFit transformed from a supplementary regimen to my passion.…

I came from a family of really athletic people. My Mom and sister Kaitlyn both played softball from a young age and had many great accomplishments. My sister Kassidy played soccer from a young age as well. I have a lot to live up to. I started playing soccer when I four and I played for one year until I was no longer interested in it anymore. I started softball when I was five, and it wasn’t my favorite. I then retreated back to soccer for a few years. When I was in second grade, I cut my ankle on the bowl that my dog broke when I was trying to get cereal because I was hungry. After that I really didn’t want to play soccer anymore, so I decided to retire my soccer cleats forever. After this, I tried various different ranging from swim team to softball, and as you can imagine, softball stuck. When it did though, it came with my hot-headed personality showing. There was no way around it. I was also very independent, which could be a good thing in some cases, but as I got older I was required to do more group work. I just didn’t know how to.…

Later that night my mother told me that even if you don't succeed at first just give it time and practice and eventually you will thrive. For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…

“Why do young athletes choose to specialize? The biggest reason is parents. Many parents encourage specialization because they believe it is an investment in a future scholarship”(Shomper). Beginning at age four and continuing until my senior year in high school, I was a multi-sport athlete. Yes, it is very challenging at times! However, playing multiple sports proved beneficial for me and made it all worth it now that I am in college and playing sports currently on a scholarship. My case is additional proof that specializing is not the best way to invest in your future. Mentally and physically, I was at the top of my game, playing multiple sports helped me to achieve this. I am a believer that all my athletic experiences played a big role in my college recruiting process. The life lessons learned both on and off the field are irreplaceable. As a parent, you have succeeded when your athletic child is able to fulfill their dream and play college ball and beyond. Knowing you played a big role in this is rewarding in itself. The benefits of being a multisport athlete far outweigh one sport specialization. “ Improved health and wellness, improved athletic performance, character development and improved coaching are the main benefits of being a multi-sport athlete”(Shomper). Studies show that many of the children who specialize in one sport start to see burnout in that sport and that often results in quitting, whereas the multi-sport athletes are not getting burned out and are having a higher percentage of those continuing to play sports throughout college and beyond. Studies have shown that children who are in…

When at the age of five, my parents began to experiment with and place me in many different activities. The first activity was gymnastics, which was a complete failure. The gym instructor would lift my body to the high bars so I can get a feel for it and in that moment I knew it wasn’t for me. The second activity my parents decided I should try next was track and field. Track was fun at first, I actually like to run and I was pretty fast, I believed. When I joined the track team the season was going to begin soon only giving me three weeks to prepare myself for my first track meet. I trained for a while thinking I was decent ready for what life has to throw at me, then the day of the track meet arrived.…
