Color Guard In The Marching Band
In high school, the only sport-like activity I participated in was color guard in the marching band, mostly because it consumed all of my time. We have tryouts and we start preparing in March and throughout the summer for competitions starting in September. It’s an immense commitment and I believe that you really have to love it, and I did.

I first started doing color guard my freshman year and I was awful. At the time my cousin, who was a senior was the captain of our team. She was amazing, talented and such a good role model. I wanted to be just like her, so I went home and practiced every day. It was my dream to become captain when I became a senior.

I worked hard and practiced all the time, and with dedication, I even got a solo

It took us hard work over the summer with struggles of band members' instrument being out of pitch or off timing etc. Although, it was all worth it until we heard the words from the announcer at the area competition that we can move forward state. I can remember people next me cheering and crying. In fact, this band of ours has not been in this type of event in over 33 years and it is not just significant to me but also to the band and people part of it at that time. What I have learned from this experience that with hard work pays with the time spent on .…

Remember that moment when you first joined color guard. Remember that moment when you felt the metal of the pole against your bare hands because you hadn’t been given gloves yet. Remember the times when you could only do a consecutive on rifle. Remember when doing a small toss seemed impossible and it felt like you were jumping in the deep end of the pool and you still couldn’t swim. Remember that day when you felt like your instructor was picking on you all day. Remember the time you messed up in your show and you wanted to cry.…

Conducting color guards builds character and leadership in leading a color guard you need to teach the cadets who have not yet done a color guard how to march, present the colors properly, and post the colors. There are many commands for such simple things. People don't realize how difficult it is to do things until they're up there standing in front of a squad getting ready to march. It takes a lot to remember all the commands for the different movements.…

During practices, we must focus on nothing but colorguard; otherwise, we cannot improve our skill and learn the work to the best of our ability. That is why I have to be organized and manage my time wisely when it comes to finishing my homework, studying for tests, and practicing for colorguard. Lastly, this activity taught me the importance of commitment, dedication, and tenacity in order to become a better member for not only myself but for the team that I love. I play a sport that’s not very popular. I play rugby. I’ve tried other sports before, but none really interested me as much as rugby. I started playing when I was a freshman at Lakeview high school. Starting at a new school I didn’t know anyone and I thought maybe a sport would help meet some people. I heard about rugby and decided to try it out. Deciding to try rugby was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. One reason rugby is unique is because you have to be flexible and adaptable. It also promotes responsibility, and creates bonds that I just don’t think other sports can.…

When the typical person thinks of sports they think of football, baseball, or basketball. While those are all great sports, what about those sports that aren't classified as sports, but should be? Marching band should be considered a sport for many reasons. Marching band teaches many of the same lessons that can be learned through sports, such as: dedication, academic responsibility and the importance of physical health. I have gained knowledge of these things through marching band. With that being said, I feel that I would be a great candidate for this scholarship.…

One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…

A controversial question asked by many musically talented individuals is whether marching band is a sport. If you asked most people they would say no, but of course they don’t see 2-3 hour rehearsals or the kids who cry when they don’t get accepted into their dream colleges because of auditions that just weren’t up to par. They only see kids in “silly” uniforms blowing into or beating on instruments. People don't see a Marching band and think that they work just as if not harder than a football team. I believe Marching band is a sport because it's performed on a collegiate level, and marching bands have yearly, if not quarterly competitions.…

Sports have always played an important role in my life. Growing up my parents encouraged me and my brother to try a multitude of sports. From a very young age, my parents urged us to play what they categorized as a “life sports” along with team sports. In their eyes, a life sport is an activity you can play throughout your life. I continue to play golf, paddle tennis, tennis, and skiing today. During my elementary and middle school days I always wanted to be a part of a team, enjoying the comradery that came along with it. The sports I played included soccer, ice-hockey, lacrosse, and field-hockey. Eventually giving up soccer, I focused solely on stick sports. Playing these three sports allowed me to make many friends that…
