Dear Principle Spencer, Associate Principal Lee, and Athletic Director Fry: You do so much for this school. The goal of success for all students is incredibly apparent through your actions. It is obvious that the football team is amazing, and so are the other sports. They all put forth hard work, and earn their greatness. But you are neglecting a major part of home football games: the marching band. The Turpin Marching Band is one of, if not the biggest team in the school, with 150 members. These people train just as hard as the football team. I can tell you with experience, with how many times I’ve pushed a heavy synth cart through the mud, or up the hill to the stadium like King Sisyphus’ boulder in the underworld. I’ve marched so hard I…
Marching band has always meant so much to me. From the start, it was a family to me that always tried, always cared, and always wanted me to do my best. If being drum major could get me any closer to giving that feeling to other people,…
It starts in early July and ends in late June. It involves great precision and discipline. High school marching band can be a full time gig for any music student that chooses to dedicate their life to this activity. High school marching band has three different seasons that a high school music student can participate in, fall, winter, and parade.…
According to the dictionary, marching band is “a group in which instrumental musicians perform for the purpose of entertainment and exercise.” However, this rigorous activity provided more lessons that impacted my life: dedication, determination, and organization.…
Music, in itself, is its own language; for some it’s easy to understand, others take it to the next level and add choreographed movement to it, such as marching bands. An average marching wind ensemble practice begins with a simple stretch and review of the basic marching techniques. They begin one week before the fall semester starts. Normal “band camp” days involve basic technique practices on the field in the morning, rehearsal after lunch, and a combination of the marching and music after their dinner. They meet three days a week during the fall semester; two and a half hours each session, depending on whether the directors think it’s necessary. They must learn a pre-game performance, their halftime show, and all stand-tunes (the short songs that are…
But, to be honest, being a band geek has nothing to do with marching band. Being a band geek means that they go overboard with being in band, not that they are in band. This stereotype is the main reason why people don’t appreciate marching band and the work that they put into a performance. Everyone notices the work and performance of the football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, track, cross-country, golf, and soccer players, but not the marchers. This is because society has told the general population that being in a sport automatically makes them “cool” and that everyone needs to pay attention to everyone that plays a sport. So, based on this logic, if marching band is found and counted as a sport, then every marcher would be considered “cool” and would probably be invited into the “popular” crowd, instead of being stuck as their own group that hangs out only in the band room. This is why so many people have been debating over the topic of marching band becoming a sport. They don’t want the “band geeks” at the same level of popularity as they are. Aside from all of the fears of marching band becoming a sport, here are some reasons why marching band should be considered a sport. Marchers work just as hard as football players. Marchers and football players both practice for crazy amounts of time and prepare for one event. Sports teams and marching bands all work towards one…
There is a big difference between school cheer and competitive cheer. School cheer should not necessarily be called a sport. Sports teams exist to compete, not to entertain or perform while supporting another group that is competing. Cheer was created to get the crowd excited and wound up. One of the requirements of a sport is to compete against an opponent, not cheer your team on and for sure not support you opponent. Even though cheerleaders have after-school practices and even participate in cheering for a team, to be qualified as a sport you must know the real definition of a…
When the typical person thinks of sports they think of football, baseball, or basketball. While those are all great sports, what about those sports that aren't classified as sports, but should be? Marching band should be considered a sport for many reasons. Marching band teaches many of the same lessons that can be learned through sports, such as: dedication, academic responsibility and the importance of physical health. I have gained knowledge of these things through marching band. With that being said, I feel that I would be a great candidate for this scholarship.…
The first year of marching band there were only 40 members; thus, everyone had to learn and play their part. In my head, playing and marching at the same time seemed like a piece of cake. In reality, it was as if I were learning a foreign language. I had to discipline myself to take extra time to practice the music and fundamentals. I still do this today, not with music, but through my studies.…
I couldn't imagine how different my life would be without marching band. Actually, I might be able to. I would be friendless, insecure, unable to lead, and left with few high school memories. I remember when my band went to Kings Island for their "Trills and Thrills" competition. Just as we were about to go home it began to downpour. Everyone was completely soaked, one kid vomited so we had to put down the windows on the bus, we were all freezing cold and ended up getting sick, but it's something I will always laugh about. I can also recall going to the University of Cincinnati Band Day and learning new games with the other bands and then when my reed broke just as we were about to walk out onto the field and I cried and cried. No matter how bad that moment was, I will always remember it. Those were the best moments of my high school life because they were spent with some of the people I love…
Marching band is not only an activity but a third parent to me as well. For all four years of high school, I've been selected to perform in Newman Smith's marching show. With long, scorching summer rehearsals and sweat-filled performances, marching band has guided me to maturity and taught me how to persevere through adversity.…
Marching band and concert band have two completely different concepts. However, many high school students consider the word band as being able to play some kind of musical instrument. Being a five year marching band member and playing in concert band for seven years, I feel as if I know the difference between these two activities. One of the main differences between marching and concert band is the mental process one must go through to memorize the music and the steps on the field. Obviously marching band is much more physical than concert band, and the adrenalin one gets before competing is extraordinarily different. Another noticeable difference is the marching band is under the direction of a student drum major and not the actual band director who conducts all concert band activities. Personally, I do not understand why the students at my high school did not know the difference between marching and concert band. In my opinion, the difference is very clear.…
Should video games be a sport it is not a new subject in high school. And do i thank video games should be a sport yes it should be a sport but in some schools they don't say it should be a sport. Throw out history it will grow into the minds of the kids and they will try and get it to be a sport. Schools should let videogames be a sport. For kids that don’t like to play contact sports, they would get another chance to play.Schools should let videogames be a sport because some of the team winnings would go to the school and some would go towards a scholarship for the team members. Video games should be a sport because some kids with disabilities would have a chance to play. Yes, video games should be considered…
In high school, the only sport-like activity I participated in was color guard in the marching band, mostly because it consumed all of my time. We have tryouts and we start preparing in March and throughout the summer for competitions starting in September. It’s an immense commitment and I believe that you really have to love it, and I did.…
Marching Band is defined as a group in which musicians perform while marching, often as entertainment or competition. This type of ensemble is the spirit of the school. A…
