Personal Essay: Colorguard As A Sport

A flying flag catches your eye; a group of dancers are spinning and tossing six foot flags, wooden rifles, and metal sabers in a sport called colorguard. I am part of the colorguard, as I have been for my entire middle school and high school life. With the qualities this activity teaches me and with the opportunities this activity gives me, colorguard became the most important activity to represent who I am and what my future can be. Colorguard is a sport that requires leadership, diligence, and self-discipline. Although not many people realize, it takes immense skill and strength to toss the equipment and incredible stamina to be able to dance for about a three to seven minute show. Not only that, but the activity holds values that have really inspired me to become a better member and a better leader, such as "we before me" and "hearts on fire, minds on ice". The colorguard is only as good as its worst member, and it is the responsibility of all members to exercise and practice leadership in this activity in order to make the year successful. Because I have done colorguard for such a long time, I am a crucial member of the team, and it has been my responsibility to teach the newer members and be a good example and role model.
During practices, we must focus on nothing but colorguard; otherwise, we cannot improve our skill and learn the work to the best of our ability. That is why I have to be organized and manage my time wisely when it comes to finishing my homework, studying for tests, and practicing for colorguard. Lastly, this activity taught me the importance of commitment, dedication, and tenacity in order to become a better member for not only myself but for the team that I love.
