Personal Narrative: Whistle ! Clear The Pool
“Whistle! Point! Clear the Pool!” is a phrase that completely dominates my life. For the past two summers I have been blessed worked as a lifeguard for AMS Pools. This year I was lucky enough to compete in the lifeguard Olympics in my area within the company. Lifeguard Olympics are an organized set of events and relays where we compete to show off, which team has the best overall lifeguarding skills and techniques. Each event has some type of scenario in which the lifeguard has to rescue the Guest In Distress (GID) and the lifeguards are ranked by time and points can be lost if improper procedures or techniques are displayed to the judge(s) and on top of that only the top three teams in each event will receive points. And the whole scenario must last no longer than three minutes. Captain of the Spinal Team, I was poised for greatness. Tasked with a simple objective, my job in the event was to extract the GID with a suspected spinal injury from the water and make sure that every member of the team is working effectively and efficiently in order to succeed. Viciously battling the other six teams for a victory, we all lined up at the edge of the pool and the GID stands …show more content…
Lauren snatched the backboard and we inched towards Peyton. As I began to close in on Peyton I turn and call out to make sure that emergency services are called and make it clear to get back to me as soon as possible. With a harmony of splashing water, we decisively reached Peyton at last. I instigated a vice grip in order to abstain from further injury to the spine. The rest of the team endeavors on slithering the backboard underneath Peyton, and we go ahead to propel towards the wall. During our odyssey, Rachel, Adrian, and Lexi harness the straps onto the GID thoroughly to the backboard while I interrogate to ensure they are still conscious. Frantically, we arrive in spitting distance of the

Today I found my LOC story at the pool. We had a bunch of things going on today such as master swim, swim lessons, lap swimming, and recreational swimming for the kids. I stopped by to talk with Pamela Harvey, one of our parents who consistently has her kids in swim lessons. I was happy to see her registered again for lessons. This time when I saw her, I asked why she registers and stays a member of the Y. It’s funny because she said exactly what I would want her to say. She explained that she loves the Y because it’s a good place for the family. It being Christian based was important to her. She even talked about why she likes our mission. This one thing stood out to me when she said, “everyone is friendly and I can tell they care about the…

Filled with nervous excitement, my ten-year-old-self ran to the bulletin board eager to discover whether or not he was accepted to the choir. As he read the list of who were chosen, his heart sank; he was not on the list. “Maybe I should give up singing ” he thought; “Maybe my voice is not good enough”. However, he refused to despair; he was determined to achieve his goals despite this failure.…

There are many influences on emotional behavior like personality, culture, gender, social convention, and more, but one that I have a constant struggle with and try to address, is fear of self-disclosure, which means the fear of revealing information about himself or herself to another and risk unpleasant consequences. I'm one of those people that tries to be honest all the time, but deep down I usually don't disclose really deep personal things about me. It's not that I'm afraid of what people will think because people will always judge. I'm not here to please everyone, just the people I care about. It's that I personally feel vulnerable. I don't want to show vulnerability in front of others. I do disclose personal information about myself…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

Endometriosis. I did not know what that word meant and I did not care at the moment. I was sixteen and fearless, but this later would scare me. I saw tears form in my mom's eyes while I sat there wondering what my mom's problem was. I thought this is probably the same as strep throat, something I could take antibiotics for and it would go away. The doctor was explaining the issue and I was slowing realizing this was not just any ordinary sickness. This was something that would stick with me forever. Then the doctor said the one word that I knew could change my life, “infertility.” Everything else faded out, my vision blurred and my mind was on pause while I thought about my dreams of having a big family. Were those…

“I told you so” is the phrase everyone loves to say when their advice or warning they give is ignored and ends up being the thing people should have listened to. Not to mention another vile event in which I vividly remember, in the year I entered 3rd grade I tried to show to my classmates that I was not that dumb and unintellectual. So when my peers and I were given the same number problem like for example 50-28 I remember that I didn’t know what to do or how to solve it. So when it was time to review and check our answers with the rest of my classmates I would randomly guess a number so I wouldn’t have to say that I didn’t know how to solve the problem. This struggle did not only happen at school but it also happened at home. Almost everyday I was given math homework since it was important to practice for upcoming tests but sadly I could not do it especially when it came to word problems. This forced…

As captain, I was given the opportunity to act as a leader, mentor and friend to my teammates. I spent the season helping everyone to run their hardest on meet days and to enjoy themselves with fun activities like our annual Triathalon, and Weekend Getaway trip. For the vast majority of runners on our team, cross country’s appeal wasn’t always the running, but the respect and unity that our team offered to those who were a part of it. Some of my proudest memories come from the fact that I was able to help create such a fantastic experience that many of those kids would treasure forever, even if the running wasn’t necessarily there passion. My years of running and growing as a leader, gave me the tools I needed to be a positive role model to…

Leave my job and start writing full-time. I’m worried about doing that as I think the world would come tumbling down, I’d lose everything and become homeless and the last thing I want to do is live on the street. I can’t stand dirt and clutter as it is so I can’t imagine what it would be like to live in a doorway or in the woods days on end without bathing.…

PT today was outstanding. And halfway through I was exhausted and feeling sorry for myself. When I finally hit the halfway point, I was excited I was going to get a breather before the run back. I was getting annoyed when we started doing some auxiliary exercises but I dug a little deeper into my emotions and started thinking why I was get annoyed. It wasn't because we were doing auxiliary exercises it was because we normally don't do that sort of thing and it took the presence of a LTC to incite this mentality of going the extra mile. The definition of Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking and this got me to thinking so this shows the appearance of lack of integrity and it bothered me because I know as a unit, we have integrity. I find it hard to…
