The first thing I noticed about where I sat was the buzzing neon sign hanging above the General Nutrition store. On the opposite side of the hallway sat two brightly lit Pepsi machines trying to entice people into buying its refreshments. Colorful advertisements stick out of the walls like signs on a highway. At first all I heard was english, but as the night continued I heard rapid fire Spanish, Colorful somali, and several asian languages. Voices bounced off the smooth cement, making it sound like there were crowds of people instead of just the handful that pass by every couple of minutes. Many different types of people pass by my observation spot. Parents hold their children’s hands to prevent them from running into the recesses of the mall. A group of gossiping teenagers wander from store to store. I saw couples that looked happy, and I saw couples that looked like they were feuding. The blank stares of college students wandering the hall made me think that it was finals week. I have seen many children walk by with curious smiles on their faces. A child holding her mother's hand can barely walk, but squeals and points at the brightly blinking vending machines. Multiple people have walked by with their eyes downcast at their phones, oblivious to their surroundings. A man asks a woman “What kind of candy should I buy?” He bought candy from a bubble gum dispenser, and walked away hand in hand with his significant other. A tired bespectacled cop smiles at passing shoppers, making his closing
