Cultural Commentary on the Movie, The Holiday
Cultural commentary on the film "the Holiday".

The Holiday is a 2006 American romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers, it stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic ocean, who temporarily exchange homes to escape heartbreak during the Holiday season. (trailer)
The film is a bright example of an American and English lifestyle, main characters of the comedy represent typical women of both countries The UsA and UK with their interests, style, hobbys and habbits.
(1)Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz)is a middle-aged woman from the heart of the US (Los Angeles) with all attributes of a typical American: in her 30s she looks perfectly - a blond with snow-white smile and slim body. During the whole film Amanda looks chic in her clothes from well-known brands.
(2)One more thing that I noticed here and in a great number of films, which is typical to all Americans are sunglasses: what's that?- a fear of sun beams, a way of hiding feelings or just an attempt to follow the fashion - who knows. Despite the cloudy weather, the total absence of the sun Amanda arrives in England in her sunglasses.
As the better part of Americans she is a workaholic, and her colleagues are really surprised, when she decides to have a break during the "hot period" Christmas.
Everyone has an oddity, and Americans as well. The fact is that all Americans visit psychologists, taking antidepressants and soporifics. During the film the main character took soporifics each time, when she went to bed, what underlined that she was really in stress because of work and private life, Americans are not able to cope with their personal problems themselves, that's why psychologists in the Us have really a good salary.
Not only Hollywood films, but statistics as well show us, that American people are highly emotional, the Film "The Hollyday" is not something out of the common run. Go off into hysterics, punch in the head ex

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

This film also supports the ‘american sweetheart’ trend as Mcadams plays the co-lead role. Mcadams again is shown to be a sweetheart as her character battles with the challenge of living her life with an absent husband. Mcadams portrays the ‘in love’ stereotype as she fights for her relationship. This film links to the other films chosen as it portrays Rachel Mcadams in yet again the ‘good’ role.…

This week is chose to take a look at the portrayal of woman in commercial cinema. American commercial cinema currently fuels many aspects of society. In the twenty-first century it has become available, active force in the perception of gender relations in the United States. In the earlier part of this century filmmakers, as well as the public, did not necessarily view the female “media image” as an infrastructure of sex inequality. Today, modern audiences and critics have become preoccupied with the role the cinema plays in shaping social values, institutions, and attitudes. American cinema has become narrowly focused on images of violent women, female sexuality, the portrayal of the “weaker sex” and subversively portraying women negatively in film. Double Indemnity can be read in two ways. It is either a misogynist film about a terrifying, destroying woman, or it is a film that liberates the female character from the restrictive and oppressed melodramatic situation that render her helpless. There are arguably two extreme portrayals of the character of Phyllis Dietrichson in Double Indemnity; neither one is an accurate or fare portrayal.…

In order to create a 1940’s vibe, Cassavetes wisely uses a specific choice of costumes, makeup and scenery to portray exactly the time period he wanted to. The main character Allie, played by Rachel McAdams, is a free-spirited 17 year old who in the beginning of the movie is seen wearing a variety of long 1940’s dresses, with patterns and specific styles commonly worn during that time period. The other main character, Noah, played by Ryan Gosling, is a teenage boy who because of his low social class, is constantly seen wearing a causal pear of slacks, worn out button down shirts, and suspenders with slicked back hair. A scene when Allie and Noah are swimming in a lake is a prime example of how the costumes contribute towards the time period. Instead of wearing modern day bikinis or swim trunks, Allie is wearing high wasted bathing suit bottoms, which covered her entire stomach and almost looked like shorts; a style of bathing suits worn by girls in the 1940’s. The makeup Allie wears in this movie as she grows up is also very old fashioned. Her excessive amounts of blush, the simple eye makeup and deep red lipstick are identical to that of a woman who lived in the 1940s. Extras and other characters that also take part in this movie, wear 1940’s attire as well. Because of this, the overall feeling of this movie is old fashioned, and a time when everything was much simpler.…

Christmas is one of the most incredible times of the year; snow on the ground, a warm fire in the living room, and twinkly lights around every turn. When I was young, I loved Christmas. Toys and treats had me in a daze for almost a week straight. I was a typical kid, and my focus during any holiday was, “What do I get? Who brought me presents?”. I never realized the true meaning of why we have holidays, other than presents, until I was seventeen years old. As I’ve started to see my family less and my co-workers more, I understand that the true meaning of holidays in general, is to spend time with our loved ones. Taking my new found wisdom into account, my opinion of the “best holiday of the year” has changed from Christmas to Thanksgiving. My views, including favorite holiday, have changed because my focus on what’s important has matured.…
