Cultural Competence In The Workplace
Cultural Competence Given that I have had previous experience with people from various cultures and differing worldviews, I may have more of an advantage than most with this topic. I have lived in group housing that taught me valuable lessons in dealing with those who have different ideas and values than me, and found that if I allow myself to be open and receptive, I can see where others’ perspectives originate, and find something worthwhile in other’s disputes. On the other hand, people always surprise me and you never can be sure what someone is going to do or say. Even typically mild-mannered people can become volatile or upset, especially when interacting with others in emotional circumstances, myself included. Firstly, I ran into a familiar face on my first day, she is a middle-aged mother named Margie who is, for lack of a better word, slow. This could be considered to be an advantage, or a disadvantage depending on the circumstances. Pondering my worldview biases raised a concern for me that I may be prejudice against those who have committed offenses against children, or who have been abusive to women. I believe if this would come up as an issue, I would be compelled to ask my supervisor how to approach the situation. Furthermore, I would like to learn more about the Latino culture and have been wanting to learn the language for decades, but fear that becoming bilingual may be an unrealistic goal. Consequently, I would like to continue to use supervision and my co-workers for helping me to deal with these issues as they arise, and plan to continue my pursuit of the empathetic acquaintance of others through my research and
