During the era of World War I and World War II, German Americans were attacked simply because of their heritage. Although they may have had nothing to do with the war, or even sited with Germany at all or as a whole, they were still targeted and prosecuted and, as I stated before, attacked. Islamic and Arab Americans faced the very same problems after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, simply because of their religion, or even their background or appearance.…
H) Americans are different from Europeans: descendant of Europeans. I.e. Families are a mix; “…family whose grandfather was an Englishman… wife was Dutch… son married a French woman…” No (European) prejudice in America, because they are American, not European. Americans are different (sense of unity).…
African Americans were brought into the US by Dutch slave traders. Many slaves worked on plantations for the whites and worked hard everyday. If any disobeyed or tried to escape they were beaten to death or just beaten. Enslaved African Americans could eventually earn freedom by buying it or if their owners made them free. When Blacks finally got rights and were free citizens of the US, they still got discriminated harshly.…
The United States in known for stereotyping individuals based on status and the way they look. During the Depression many African Americans lost their jobs just because of their skin color and because they made less money than the white man. Even in times of economic distress it did not matter if you were born and raised in America you were…
African American is a minority group which lives in America. They experienced discrimination, and other prejudice mostly by white people. The most pathetic discrimination happened by black men. In the past, People considered them as unknown people because black men were lack of identities. It did not matter if they are slaves or freeman, fathers or children, religious or not.…
Americans have treated many groups of people badly, but a group if people I think we treated really poorly was the African Americans. We made them our slaves and abused them and treated them very bad just because they have different color skin then us. Even after slavery was illegal we still treated them horrible. We did not even let black and white kids go to the same school. African Americans did not get to drink out of the same water fountains as white people either. In the south if a black man even looked at a white women they could get beat for it. We treated them very poorly for no reason. African Americans are not treated that bad today but some people are still racist towards…
Life for the African Americans in the Deep South was severe because of the climate and excessive labor. The rice plantations were really far away from each other and most male Africans died, so only the newly imported slaves could survive.…
One language is not more American than the others. One religion is not more American than another. For example the KKK thought that people with black skin were less american than…
It seems like the difference between Black and African-American is that the first one was used more in political settings where they thought there was a need to separate or divide people by their skin color while African-American was used by people who still identify themselves with African, Still both terms were created to alienate one group from the other. As the reading explains the term black “Maintained that physical differences between the races account for social and…
1 . What issues most concerned black political leaders during Reconstruction? Reconstruction brought important social changes to former slaves. Families that had been separated before and during the Civil War were reunited, and slave marriages were formalized through legally recognized ceremonies. Families also took advantage of the schools established by the Freedmen's Bureau and the expansion of public education, albeit segregated, under the Reconstruction legislatures. New opportunities for higher education also became available with the founding soon after the Civil War of black colleges, such as Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The number of African-American churches grew significantly and became social and political centers as well as houses of worship. Black ministers assumed a leadership role in the community and were among the first elected officials. The most fundamental concern of blacks through all of the changes, though, was economic survival.…
National Center for Education Statistics in 2008 report African American males generally have a lower number of years of education than African American females and White males and females. Differences in education are inextricably linked to chasms in employment.…
The two-minority group that will be discuss is the African American and the Latino American. This two minority cultural groups have witness discrimination, stereotype, and bias. The diversity situation or cultural dilemma that I chose is discrimination. When dealing with discrimination it links to other things such as being stereotyped and biases. I feel these three topics have something in common which is someone or a cultural group is being judged.…

Joel Spring’s Deculturalization and the Struggle for Equality examines the educational policies in the United States that have resulted in intentional patterns of oppression by Protestant, European Americans against racial and ethnic groups. The historical context of the European American oppressor is helpful in understanding how the dominant group has manipulated the minority groups. These minority groups include Americans who are Native, African, Latin/Hispanic, and Asian. Techniques for deculturalization were applied in attempts to erase the oppressed groups’ previous identities and to assimilate them into society at a level where they could be of use to the oppressors. Techniques include isolation from family, replacement of language, denial of education, inclusion of dominant group world view, and provision of inferior teachers and poor facilities. Relationships between educational policy and instances of racism and patterns of oppression are explored in the following. A section will also compare my prior education to the one presented in Spring’s book.…
