Cultural diversity, what is cultural diversity, and how does it affect the work place? I believe that there are people out there that still may not have a true understanding as to the exact meaning of cultural diversity, or they assume that it is something that only pertains to people who are of a different back ground as the next person. Cultural diversity encases more than just people who come from different backgrounds. According to www.EHow.com Cultural diversity is a peaceful coexistence of multiple cultures or societies in an organization (e.g. workplace or university.) A culture can be based on ethnicity (Hispanic, Asian), gender (male, female), age, sexual orientation or religion. Cultural diversity is also referred to as multiculturalism. Two of the key aspects of cultural diversity are coexistence without conflict and exchange of ideas. As a nation we have come a long way as far as cultural diversity within the workplace is concerned. (Hunter, 2009) However, this is still a complaint that can be heard within corporate America even through all this growth and change. People still have closed views of cultural diversity, instead of embracing the diversity, they have and continue to have a blind eye and are prejudice to people are different in some way, whether is age, race, sex or any other form of cultural difference. Currently I live in a community of approximately 21,785 people according to the 2010 US Census. Herriman, which is about 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City has grown by leaps and bounds over the last twelve years. Herriman was founded as a farming community in 1849 and was incorporated in 1999. Herriman still feels like a small town, an idea which is held onto by its community leaders and population. I noticed while in researching the varying statistics for my city that I look like about 90% of the population. At 38, I am a little bit older than the average age of 27, but I am Caucasian, as are the majority of the residents. I noted with interest, during our last mayoral race, the current mayor spent the time to go out and knock on doors introducing himself to everyone. He made a significant impact on me as he stood and visited with my family and seemed to have the same values and ideals that I do. I cannot say that I have noticed a large difference in how minorities are treated by members of my community. In fact, in my local neighborhood we have a few families of varying ethnicities which have been welcomed and encouraged to teach about their homelands. It has been fascinating to watch and learn about the cultures from which they came and even to try some of the more traditional foods.…

In simple terms, cultural diversity can be defined as the level of diversity or difference in a given society. Societies that display high levels of diversity exhibit many differences across that population. Differences can include skin color, religious affiliation, cultural practices and other ethnic beliefs and customs. Immigration is a major factor in determining the level of diversity that a given society is exposed to. Ever since the dawn of time, humans have traveled the globe in curiosity to interact with other civilizations. These interactions were either well intentioned to share and form partnerships, or militaristic conquests to expand territories and force populations to conform to foreign ideals. These such interactions helped to foster cultural diversity both genetically, as is the case with Attila the Hun, or substantively through the spread of cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.…
