America would be considered a multicultural society instead of a monoculture society. To be considered a monoculture society, you have to have a single dominant culture, with viewing history in the sense of it contributing only to that single culture. Were as in a multicultural, it includes history as an open point-of-view. With soft universalism, it claims that most values differ from culture to culture but a few bottom-line values that all cultures share. This bottom-line that all cultures share, but are considered different in their own way is their religion. In Americas multicultural society, religious freedom “has always included religious tolerance” (Volokh). Concluding with this, there are two different forms the multiculturalism. Earlier in a monoculture society, where their society has only one dominant culture.
Particularism is branched off of multiculturalism, and it believes that people whom do not belong to a monoculture society, should recover their self-esteem by adapting, and learning the traditions of the dominant culture. Hence forth in a pluralism society, another branch of multiculturalism, believes that “racial and ethnic discrimination in a population of cultural diversity can be abolished by a shared orientation in one another’s cultural traditions and history” Rosenstand G-5). Knowing this North America would be considered a pluralism society, but there is a down fall to this
pluralism. After 9/11, racial discrimination had gone through the roof. Muslims in particular were continuously being targeted as terrorist, they still are today, whether or not society would like to admit it. In controversy to the war on terror, North America is a well diverse society.
