Many of the problems now and in time have been the product of someone stereotyping someone else for being “different” than they are. It can be based off the pigmentation of one’s skin, the religious differences between people, but more often than not, it is because of the class a person falls into economically. Class is a system that distinguishes people by the amount of money a person makes, or that is what class is supposed to be. We often see the upper-class portrayed as educated, clean, and powerful people as opposed to the lower-class who are seen as dirty, lazy, and powerless individuals. The way the media stereotypes the economic classes makes a class seem like a culture instead of an economic standing. In many cases, us individuals allow those stereotypes to become who we are.…

L.M. Montgomery once said “We pay a price for everything we get or take in this world.” I think his idea of this is right. In order for you to accomplish what you want, there will be consequences and you need to get through it. I agree with this quote because it doesn't matter what you want to accomplish there will always be an outcome whether it’s good or bad. There are a lot of books that relate to this quote. One of them being, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and another called The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. Both Of Mice and Men and The Miracle Worker relate to this quote because they both experience and undergo situations and display actions that lead them to pay a price whether they caused it on themselves or not.…

Cultural relativism can be defined as the understanding that the choices one can consider morally right are those approved of by one’s culture. Cultural differences in moral beliefs don’t imply cultural relativism because nonmoral beliefs can alter the perspective of basic moral principles shared by the culture. This would imply that there are no universally set/correct moral standards. Saying that cultural differences in moral beliefs imply cultural relativism is only part of an argument, not a conclusion supported by valid premises. There is the possibility that the moral issue in question is, in fact, an objective truth, in which case the culture is purely wrong. If cultural relativism exists, and no culture can ever be wrong in their moral…

A student raised with the Culturalcentric lens may have difficulty adopting some of the traditional classroom norms of group behavior. If there is a way to incorporate a cultural practice or tradition, one that is unique to this student, do so. It would validate them and offer a wonderful learning opportunity for their classmates. Also, there are times when the needs of the entire classroom must supplant the individual. A student with a Culturalcentric lens may have a challenge realizing these moments. A clear but firm reminder to this student that they are part of a larger group with common, universal goals - i.e. "to learn", may be needed.…

“The only worthwhile literature is that which makes you think about you own life.” This statement is valid for many reasons like, sometimes you can compare the story to your own life, it makes you think about what you said and done to other people, and the story can be a real eye opener and could possibly help you get your life back on track to the road of success. Two works of literature that support this quote are A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Spark and To Save a life by Jim and Rachel Britts.…

This premise of cultural relativism shows prefigure of moral relativism. Moral relativism can be generally grouped into three categories; (1) descriptive moral relativism, (2) normative moral relativism, and (3) meta-ethical moral relativism. Descriptive relativism, according to Frankena, is the idea ‘that the basic ethical beliefs of different people and societies are different and even conflicting’ [1973:109]. The second form of ethical relativism conceives the idea that ‘what is really right or good in the one case is not so in another. Such a normative principle seems to violate the requirements of consistency and universalization’[1973:109]. The last among the three reveals that ‘there is no objectively valid, rational way of justifying one against another; consequently, two conflicting basic…

Being culturally competent of a student’s culture is essential for school counselors within a diverse population. In order for a school counselor to be culturally competent, it is essential for them to be aware of three major ideas: know yourself, know the student, and know the technique. Within these three competencies there are common themes that are utilized throughout each. Beliefs and attitudes, knowledge, and skills are all indispensable within the context of school counseling. Throughout the evolution of school counseling, these concepts have been consistent with multicultural counseling. However, based on recent research counselors are developing reason to believe that it is also imperative to explore spirituality as one of the competencies. These multicultural counseling competencies as well as spirituality will all be explored within this paper in regards to how school counselors (and myself, as a school counselor in training) can best counsel and work through the diverse issues of their students. The competencies being addressed can be further explored in Operationalization of the Multicultural Counseling Competencies (Arredondo, et al., 1996).…

I have lived in Mexico for the most part of my life and I also lived in the United States a couple years ago; language was never a barrier to me since I knew enough english to get around even if I was not sure if I was saying everything the correct way, I never felt intimidated by language until I arrived in France, at first it was very hard for me to get around due to the fact that I only knew a few words in french like “merci”, “mon amie”, “Je te aime” and “bonjour” of course it was not enough to even try, or at least that’s what I thought until I started trying to speak english to french people. Unlike experiences I’ve had in other countries before, in France it seemed impossible to find someone who spoke other language than their native one.…

Based on my observation, one of the common non-verbal ‘things’ done in my community or culture is we greet each other with Salam. Salam is something like shake hand but in more polite way by using both hands. The next thing I noticed is that every time people do Salam their right hand will go to their chest, including me, based on my knowledge it is to indicate that we greet each other sincerely. In another word, based from what I read it is to show that we greet each other from the heart. Another way practiced by my culture is, if we shake hand with older people we should greet them with Salam and follow up with touching our nose tip to the back of their hand.…
