Cultural Privilege In The United States
There are a lot of cultural groups in the United States, which makes the country diverse. Cultural privilege and stereotyping exist in the United States. Cultural privilege is an advantage that a dominant group people have than the rest of the other groups. I believe that men have more privilege than women in the United States. I have done my interview on a woman who lives, in my neighborhood. I asked her questions about cultural privilege, stereotypes, and experiences with health care.

I compared my cultural privileges as a man to my interviewee with her being a woman. One of the cultural privileges that I enjoy having is that I do not have to spend hours of my morning applying makeup to be physically attractive. I think that woman are judge more on their looks than men are. The American society displays an image of what a woman should look like, while that image is not as important to men. My interviewee wished she could wake up and get ready quickly in the morning like a man, but unfortunately that is not the case. Another privilege I enjoy having over women is the accessibility of restrooms. Men can use the urinals or the stalls and usually finish up quickly. Whereas women are limited to using only the stalls, which then if the bathroom is crowded,

There have been people around me that expect me to know how to do “manly” tasks, such as fixing a car. I do know the basics of a car, but I would not say I could fix my own car with my own hands. I think another stereotype is that men are perceived to not express their emotions as much as women. Such as crying, worrying, and dramatic. My interviewee says she has been stereotyped to know less information than men such as directions and technology. She says women are also stereotyped on being emotional, not tough, and being bad drivers. However, she feels that these stereotypes are fading away due to the awareness of women’s

In America, privileged is something we see every day whether it is gender, sexuality, age, socioeconomics, or religion. Tim Wise documentary on White Privilege discuss inequality of race between blacks and whites. In this paper I will discuss other privilege beside raced that are enjoyed by a preferred category. People of a particular category are in denial of privilege, such as rich people feel people of poverty put themselves in that predicament. Rich people feel there should be no government assistance that includes: public housing, food stamps, federal grants, and Medicare. In America women are paid 79 percent of what men make. I notice that women are chosen more for teaching and secretarial jobs while men get chosen for manual labor jobs.…

As a white female who is a part of the upperclass society, I have grown up with an immense amount of privilege. I am normally valued as an important part of conversations and I have never had to prove myself as intelligent to the opposite gender, or had to work harder to reach my goals due to the colour of my skin. As Peggy McIntosh says in White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, “white privilege is like an invisible knapsack of special provisions, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks.” After becoming exposed to the concept that I am extremely privileged, I became less naive about the subject in order to understand and connect to all individuals on a equal level. The article written by Peggy McIntosh set me onto the…

In "White Privilege and Male Privilege" by Peggy McIntosh, she talks about unearned privilege from white Americans and men. She states, "Virtually all men deny that male overreward alone can explain men’s centrality in all the sanctums of our most powerful institutions. Moreover, those few who will acknowledge that male privilege systems have overempowered them usually end up doubting that we could dismantle these privilege systems (McIntosh, 1988:95).“I believe that this addresses a mindset of most people that are aware of their privilege but aren't sure of what to do to fix our social constructions. While I worked in insurance most men were in positions of power with a few women acting as agents, while many women were customer service representatives. The few female insurance agents made significantly less even if they had significantly more accounts. Yes, it is true that part of the reason females are…

The essay “White Privilege and Male Privilege” written by Peggy McIntosh was enlightening and controversial. It was enlightening because she shows you how certain groups of people can have privilege over other different groups, and be unaware or in denial over it. Peggy’s story was controversial because it talked about the privilege that very few have the courage to talk about. The white and male privilege and the fact that it is looming over our heads as a society. Throughout history there’s a superior and inferior race and sex. The superior race is the white race, opposed to the African Americans who are considered the inferior. Additionally men are the superior sex opposed to women.…

This has been the case in America with White Privilege. It started when whites first immigrated to other countries besides Europe and began taking land and enslaving people. They enslaved many people among these people were Africans. People were not able to defend against these foreigners for they were better equipped and had the only guns. When the White immigrants came to America they conducted mass genocide to the natives and conquered the land there for when they decided it was time to write history then they wrote it to make them seem a favorable is possible and also established laws only benefiting the White man and white women alike although at the time women were still subordinates to White men.…

A privilege is defined as a special advantage, unearned benefit that is granted to a certain group at birth. Race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and many more attributes are included as privileges. Privileged people gain ease in society because they are considered to be normal. There is a sense of entitlement for these people because the immunities are portrayed every day on mass media, in the workplace, at school, and with authority figures. This social inequality is very unfair because what one is born into is entirely involuntary.…

Today, before we even get to know a person, we fit them into a stereotype we think they fit best in, without any knowledge of that person, we just call it how we see it and go from there. A stereotype is based on something that is true, but is exaggerated and isn’t always true, a misconception, however, is formed from a stereotype but has no truth behind it, for example, going outside without putting a sweater will result in getting sick. Today women are considered strong and intelligent, and fought long and hard for the equality they deserve, still they battle with stereotypes about how women aren’t as smart as men, or that women aren’t good at sports and so on and so forth. Of all the stereotypes, women in the army are the most understated…

This article was enlightening to say the least. We frequently discuss our privileges, however, I feel that we never truly acknowledge what roles these privileges serve within our own lives. This article allowed me to think about my own privileges in more depth. I also began to think about one of the past articles that had been assigned, I believe it was the one about the invisibility of whiteness by Michael Kimmel. He wrote about a conversation that he overheard between a black woman and a white woman. The white woman claims that she and the black woman are sisters because they suffer from the same disadvantages. However, the black woman disagrees and asks how she sees/defines herself. The white woman replies, "I see a woman" or something along those lines. The black woman then…

The cultural images produced by the media serve to further oppress racialized groups in America and form national psyches which allow America’s institutionalized racism to prosper. Images proposed by the media and popular culture have made claims about all different racialized groups in America. The media has been instrumental in perpetuating ideas about the black male perp, the black male buffoon, all black Americans since the days of slavery as “darkies,” who are content with playing in the mud, Americans of European descent as harmless, safe, and normal, Asian Americans as dangerous, inassimilable aliens, who pose a threat to Americans, the American Indian culture as a joke,…

Injustices tend to affect almost everyone, but for those who are poor, uneducated, immigrants and ethnics, they all seem to be at the forefront for the majority of most injustices that occur today. It can be suggested that these groups of people become easy targets because they are viewed as negative factors in a society that has been cultured towards a specific idea and way of life. Over the course of the term we have seen examples of racial and ethnic profiling, inequality in wealth distribution and a difference in quality of life and education among the poorest and wealthiest of Americans. This trend of injustices seem to affect people who are trying to achieve a better life for themselves and create a self identity that is different from the majority, but the only way to achieve success in this unforgiving culture is forget self identify and blend into a society that doesn’t accept anything short of the…

All groups are not treated or viewed equally in all societies. Sometimes, a minority group can be defined by constituting a smaller percentage of the population than another group. However, sometimes a minority constitutes the majority of the population. A minority group is a subordinate group which has significantly less control over their lives than a dominant group. As a result, the minority group has less opportunity afforded to them than the dominant group. Particularly, the majority of the population of the United States is female; yet, males still control most of the political and social power across the nation.…

While doing this assignment I found that I am privileged because I am white, able-bodied, heterosexual, Christian, middle class and English speaking. All of which are things I did not know were considered to be “privileged”. I never viewed myself as being more privileged than anyone else. For me it does not matter if a person was gay, straight, what religion they are, their race or their income since I always treated everyone with respect. I also never saw myself as privileged I guess because I am white. Although, I come to realize after this assignment that it may be because I am white that I don’t notice these privileges and now wonder if I am treated differently in my day-to-day life than people of other races. However, what I have noticed prior to this assignment was that I am…
