With our classrooms demographics becoming more and more diverse, the need for a culturally responsive management approach has increased. The Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (CRCM) approach takes into consideration the cultural differences of the classroom’s students and teacher. Weinstein, Tomlinson-Clarke, and Curran (as cited in p. 455) consider five elements of the CRCM approach to be of great relevance to teachers: recognition of ethnocentrism, knowledge of students’ culture, understanding the broader context, use of culturally appropriate management strategies, and commitment to caring classrooms.…

Having cultural competence is something that is gained through experience with other cultures other than your own. This means understanding that different cultures do in fact exist and one must be aware that we are all different with different cultures. For me a time that I connected with a different culture in a work environment was a few years back when I was working as a driver and my assistant was an African man, very nice man, who was new to the job and I had to train him by showing him how things get done properly. When we would communicate it wasn’t that bad since he had studied the English language back home he only had some words that he couldn’t pronounce, so I would help him.…

Becoming a culturally competent counselor is an ongoing process; it is vital that professionals strive to become culturally competent as it would help the counseling process and therapeutic relationship. In order to learn more about other ethnic/racial groups that are different from my own I would need to become more involved in the community, read educational literature about ethnic/racial groups, and engage directly with other ethnic/racial groups. For instance, during times when I travel to other states, I should take advantage of that opportunity and explore ethnic and culture groups. An example of this would be my trip to Pennsylvania, during that vacation, I spend time with people that are Amish. Often times there are activities and…

New York City was also a remarkably diverse location for cultural experimentation. Immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa brought their cultures with them as they traveled to the United States. All these diverse cultures motioned to the belief of cultural pluralism (Hutchinson). Many people believed that cultures should prosper in harmony rather than meld together. Cultural pluralism persuaded many African Americans to appreciate their black roots. In addition to the location and time period of the Harlem Renaissance, another one of those factors are the social foundations of that time period. New socioeconomic opportunities were becoming available for all races and genders (Hutchinson). This was one of the first time that African Americans were able to seize the moment and express themselves. Another socioeconomic component was the Great Migration. This event was the movement of 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the urban North. The increasing number of African American began the development of racial pride. This racial pride provided the necessary motivation to create national organization, such as, the NAACP, the National Urban League, and the…
Cultural competence as the process of recognizing one own lifestyle, feeling, opinion and surrounding without making it impact others with a different background. Cultural competence is also acknowledging, understanding, embracing, respecting cultural differences and assimilate nursing care accordantly to each client’s culture. (Deborah L. Flowers).…
It is unfortunate that this has been their experience. It is because I am a health care provider, I want to be optimistic, and assure that health care facilities and Nursing, in general, are doing all that they can to change that. As a nursing major, I had taken many classes which taught me about the importance of culturally congruent nursing care and cultural sensitivity. As I had explained in the response to Elizabeth's post, providing certified, medical interpreters by all health care facilities to the people with a less than adequate understanding of the English language, is required by law. Many hospitals, I have to say, including the hospital, I am employed by, provides such services to the patients, including teaching materials in…
