Research shows that relevant learning means effective learning. The drilling method is known now to be neurologically useless. Meaningful activities that both engage students emotionally and also connect with what they have already learned are what helps build that neural connection and long-term storage. Students connect well with the material, whether through engaging them emotionally or connecting new information with prior acquired knowledge. Students are left behind not only because they quickly forget or disengage, but they lose the motivation to try.

Culturally responsive pedagogy is a student-centered approach to teaching. Students’ cultural strengths are identified and nurtured to promote student achievement and sense of well-being about the student’s cultural place in the world. Applying culturally responsive pedagogy, students receive equal opportunities to achieve full potential. It also allows students preparation for competent participation in increasingly intercultural society.
Research show that students that connect well to the world around them if suspense is used. Students are more engaged if the teacher drops hints about a new unit before actually revealing what it may be. This can activate emotional signals and keep the students stimulated. Similarly, students also work well if they are given the opportunity to choose a particular topic, or asked to design one of their own. If students choose the lesson, they better understand the goal of the lesson and become more emotionally invested in and attached to the learning outcomes.
