Global Literature Class Analysis
Global Literature class has been a class that has taught me so much throughout the semester from how to write a well-thought out thesis to talking about how the different stories can affect our cultural views. After reading all of these books and short stories it has given me a better view on being a global citizen. Being a global citizen has to do with being informed person and not to assume things about another culture without being fully aware of cultural surroundings. Being able to communicate and collaborate is something that Greenville College puts a lot of pride in allowing all of their students have the opportunity to have open discussions about different things that will be taking place in the culture around them and around the world. We have done this in this class by talking about each of the books and stories that we have read. We talk about each of the cultures that have to do with each of the different countries. Being able to compare and contrast their culture to ours allows up to relate and see how things are different. In this class we communicated our different views in creative ways of writing assignments, presentations and class discussions. …show more content…
Being given the opportunity to read and reflect on these different cultures has given me a different view on how each of these cultures interact and live their lives. Dr. Lafaye has given very good insight into how many of these cultures live and give details that the book does not go into much detail with. I would not have been able to see all of the different details to these stories without the fun facts that Dr. Lafaye added to our discussions. One thing that I have found helpful was looking at the author's background. Being able to look at the author's cultural and social background allows you to have insight to how they came about writing these

Classic books tell us about culture because they explain how people were told and expected to inherit things from family such as; whom you get married to; what job you have for a living; what type of class family you come from whether that would be upper or lower class. These timeless novels show how culture affected society too, considering whom they talked to, how they talked, where they stayed compared to a lower class persons culture.…

Everyone is affected by their own culture. The way people think, talk, eat, and spend their free time is greatly influenced by the culture they are born into. When people read a book, they are exposed to the culture of others throughout the world. To be able to read these books set in another culture, one must be able to understand it first. This is especially prevalent in The Kite Runner, a book about the struggles of a young Afghan boy as he grows in his changing homeland. An understanding of the caste system and the value of loyalty is essential in comprehending and enjoying The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini.…

Religion played an important role in each of the communities he spoke about. The one that intrigued me the most was when he spoke about how Muslim woman really don't have equal rights as many of the woman in the West. He sets the example of how woman in the West are allowed to swim half naked and be around men, but if Muslim woman were to do that they would be severely punished. He also mentioned a t.v show that is completely legal to watch over there, yet if people in the community would act like it they would also be killed. Another culture he spoke about was how Chinese women practiced foot-binding for a thousand years and what once was considered beautiful became ugly and a type of disfigurement.…

At the beginning of this course, I hoped to learn about cultures that I previously knew little about. I think that this class did help me achieve this goal. I learned about issues, like the Arab Spring, that I had little knowledge of previously. One issue that I knew especially little about was the Blood Diamonds. While in the past I had heard the term "blood diamonds" mentioned, nobody had ever thoroughly explained what those were and how they came to be. I never knew that slaves mined the gems, and that the money acquired from selling the diamonds was used to fund a war. The issue helped me see how influential the shopping habits of developed countries can be on other nations across the world. If there is an injustice taking place, every…

Throughout the text I would define “culture” as any group of people. Before rereading the story I was able to apply culture to most parts of my life. After rereading the story with a different perspective of culture, I make it out as a more global term. Rather than thinking of individual’s lives, I thought more about civilizations. I found that along with the change of perspective comes a whole new output of the text. This is why it is important to reread the text because without doing so it would be challenging to find the meanings of all the words used. If we changed any of the meanings or views of them, it dramatically changes the points the story is trying to get across and the way the story flows.…

As human beings, knowing the different cultures surrounding us is of a great importance. The book “Foreign to Familiar” by Sarah A. Lanier, studied during Life skills class, is based on what Lanier refers to as “cold” and “hot” cultures. Several examples of her own experiences are introduced to the reader in this book, giving the reader an often broad idea of what she wants us to know.…
