I enjoyed reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time because the author, Mark Haddon, used such an engaging writing style. The use of the first person for the narrator allowed the readers to connect with the main character at a deep level and to understand his disease of Asperger's Syndrome. This point of view encourages the reader to empathize with the character and to experience his overwhelming mix of emotions. In addition, the use of graphics and illustrations was an interesting way of portraying how Christopher thinks. Lastly, the book being written in first person had both advantages and disadvantages.…
In the book “Night”, Elie Wiesel displays loyalty and solidarity within his relationship with his father even through the horrid obstacles he had to endure. Wiesel demonstrated to us readers that his love for his father was a stronger force for survival than the selfish idea for self-preservation. He also demonstrated how having little faith can conquer and that a person should not lose faith no matter how hard the challenges are. As times became harder, their relationship became stronger. Although their relationship transformed, Elie had to face burden and guilt towards the end of their journey.…

In the short story Marigolds, Eugenia Collier writes, “This was the beginning of compassion, and one cannot have compassion and innocence.” How do we know when one has lost his or her innocence? The definition of innocent in free from moral wrong; not corrupted. The definition of compassion is sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. The sentence is a paradox because when you lose your innocence you now have compassion.…
Each person has their distinct characteristics--some prefer an easy-going lifestyle and enjoy their days while others prefer a well-organized lifestyle and set efficient goals. However, life is totally different for Christopher John Francis Boone, the main character in the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night-time by Mark Haddon. Christopher suffers from an autism-related disorder so he behaves and thinks differently than the majority of the people in society do. Christopher was portrayed as a strict person who cannot empathize with others. Haddon demonstrates Christopher’s mechanical nature by using his special rules such as not eating food that touches each other, differentiating his daily emotions by car colors, and using graphs to interpret people’s emotions.…
A scream emerges. Everyone looks around, surprised to see a young adult, crying and rolling on the ground. Someone tries to help him. He hits the person and screams again. This is Christopher John Francis Boone, the main character of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This novel doesn’t have one specific theme because it is written with the perspective of Christopher, an autistic young adult who doesn’t get typical things the way I, and most people do.…
What is a perfect family? In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, the family of a 15 year-old boy is broken and disproportionate. He is ignorant as to what goes on in his family because family related issues are kept hidden from him. Similarly, in Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the families that are discussed in the play deal with multiple issues as well. In both texts, family is a vital theme but is portrayed in a negative way. Haddon and Shakespeare both emphasize and exaggerate the flaws that occur in family relationships to resemble the reality that it is “normal” to have a “not normal” family. These defects are shown through the mistrust between family members, broken relationships…
The purpose of “Acquainted with the Night” is to show the loneliness one can have going through depression. Almost feeling like everything is sad, even objects or things that don't have feelings. This poem illustrates someone sad and lonely one night walking down the street “unwilling to explain.” The title of this poem holds significance because “acquainted” means to know someone, whereas this piece is about not having anyone and being lonely. On the other hand, “ Out, Out--” was written to portray a story about a young boy cutting wood with his father when his sister calls him in for dinner, he gets excited and jumps up and down and almost cuts his hand off completely with a buzz saw. When the doctor came to help and amputate his hand, the…
The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time written by Mark Haddon portrays the ideas of coping with loss through human relationships and the need for control in humanity, which is represented throughout the Boone family. Coping with loss and control are both depicted through the Boone family and to a larger extent Christopher, the protagonist who is a 15-year-old Autistic boy. Haddon creates a unique perspective through the characterisation and the disproportionate level of control throughout the Boone Family.…
