ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Firstly, I would like to thank our school principal Mr. O. Alleyne for giving us permission to host the cricket tournament for the S. B. A. Secondly, I would like to thank all the students of the school who gave their time to come and participate in the tournament. I would also like to thank all the group members for their cooperation and for making the tournament to be a success. Finally, I would like to thank all those persons who helped me throughout the tournament.

INTRODUCTION
The School Based Assessment for Physical Education and Sports instructs that students have to host a competition, with each student taking on responsibilities of one role as an official in the tournament. The students were expected to manage every aspect of the tournament such as planning the games, raising money for the equipment, advertising, and umpiring each game. For the SBA, our class was split up into two groups and each group was asked to decide a sport they would like to host for the tournament. Each member of the group was responsible for a certain aspect in the tournament. Our group decided to choose cricket. Cricket was chosen mainly because the majority of us in the group, play cricket for the school and it would be good to expose cricket to the school. The tournament was open to all students in the school, especially students in first form and the female students as they were all eager and enthusiastic about participating in the tournament. Throughout the competition, each student was required to fulfill the responsibilities of their respective role and report on what they had done. My S. B.A is based on the role of an Umpire.

All of us know about baseball since it is America’s game, but many of us have no idea what cricket is. The sports are very similar yet very different. A former U.S. ambassador to Britain once said, “Even Americans living in England usually find it easier to become a practicing Buddhist than a cricket fan”. This statement shows just how different the two sports are. Comparing and contrasting the two sports would be very intriguing, so that is what I’m going to do today.…

On Thursday February 9, 2012, at Mario’s Bowling and Entertainment Palace 7pm, the two teams that played were Scotia Trust and Commonwealth Bank. I did like my experience at the alley it was a great one, that night was another nail-biter for Team Scotia Trust. They reigned victorious by upsetting Commonwealth Bank the number two team in the league by winning two games and losing one, pushing them to the number three position. Barbara Scott turned in a stellar performance by bowling her highest game of the season 180 and she was assisted by Verlene Harris, who helped won the game that night. The final scores of that night, was Scotia Trust with 300 points and Commonwealth Bank with 270 points. What I didn’t like about my experience was the fact that the arrangement was not organized at all. The game was supposed to start promptly at 7pm but they couldn’t, because most of the team mates didn’t arrived as yet. So unfortunately, the game had to start at 8pm, for most of the team mates being so late that was really like an inconvenience. My thoughts on how this event could be educational for students, by teaching you teamwork. This sport would help you learn to work with teammates, both good and bad ones.…

Cricket has been intertwined in the life of West Indians since it arrived in the islands. It has been a representation of injustice and prejudice as well as a conduit for social and political triumph in the West Indies. The development of cricket, as not just another game, mirrors the question for decolonization from Britain and also the struggles of nationalist and independence endeavors. Throughout its lifespan, the West Indies cricket team has been an institution where racial divide was present and then conquered, mirroring the social and political flows evident in mainstream society. Its legacy and continuation validates C.L.R James statement that “There is an intimate connection between cricket and west Indian social and political life”.…
