Project Cyborg[edit]
Probably the most famous piece of research undertaken by Warwick (and the origin of the nickname, "Captain Cyborg", given to him by The Register) is the set of experiments known as Project Cyborg, in which he had a chip implanted into his arm, with the aim of "becoming a cyborg".
The first stage of this research, which began on 24 May 1998, involved a simple RFID transmitter being implanted beneath Warwick's skin, and used to control doors, lights, heaters, and other computer-controlled devices based on his proximity. The main purpose of this experiment was said to be to test the limits of what the body would accept, and how easy it would be to receive a meaningful signal from the chip.[35]
The second stage involved a more complex neural interface which was designed and built especially for the experiment by Dr. Mark Gasson and his team at the University of Reading. This device consisted of an internal electrode array, connected to an external "gauntlet" that housed supporting electronics. It was implanted on 14 March 2002, and interfaced directly into Warwick's nervous system. The electrode array inserted contained 100 electrodes, of which 25 could be accessed at any one time, whereas the median nerve which it monitored carries many times that number of signals. The experiment proved successful, and the signal produced was detailed enough that a robot arm developed by Warwick's colleague, Dr Peter Kyberd, was able to mimic

In the future technology will become so prevalent that it’s only natural that people will start “upgrading” themselves, thus effectively making them cybernetic organisms or in shorter words a cyborg. A cyborg is defined by Webster as a person whose physiological functioning is aided by or dependent upon a mechanical or electronic device. There are a number of people who currently are enhanced by a machine including, Kevin Warwick, Jesse Sullivan, Jens Naumann, or even Jerry Jalava. All the technology aiding them is different, but it all amounts to the same fact, something that they previously couldn’t do is now possible thanks to a machine.…

In the creation of a living computer system "we are, according to Kevin Ulmer of The Genex Corporation, making a computer from the very stuff of life."17 Eventually it is expected that these systems will be so miniturized that they may be planted in humans so as to regulate chemical and systemic imbalances. As these chips are used to operate mechanical arms, or negate brain or nerve damage the issue of man‑robots, cyborgs, will arise. The development of such organic computers is expected in the early 1990's. This new technolgical development will force a redefinition of our conception of…

In addition, a famous fiction movie called “EX Machina” tells a terrifying story that a scientist is killed by a human-like robot produced by himself, while his original intention to design such a machine is just simply assisting him with housework. When the robots have more mature artificial intelligent which is exactly what people desire, it is rational to assume that they can acquire the incentive to offend, even hurt their masters just like what people do to each other. Although it is a science-fiction movie, the thoughts behind its story definitely deserve the public careful concern. The dangerous and limitation of robots are still available so that we should use them as prudently as…

In this day and age, new technology is everywhere, but it’s usually in the form of phones, computers, and, now, watches. However, we’re forgetting one, robots. Now, they’re still quite popular, but they’re mostly the ideals of science fiction worlds set so far into the future we’ve migrated to space. Is it really so farfetched of an idea, though, to think that maybe we could achieve that level? No, in fact and despite the spotlight being diverted away, we’re heading down the path to robo-world already. What a robot is and has been is quite a lenient description, but no one can deny how much they’ve already shaped our lives. According to the passage “Robots Long Ago” by Karen Brinkmann, “Today robots help people with everything from surgery…

The sole aim of the technological advancements in various domains has always been the simplification and betterment of our lives. Scientists, engineers and technicians spend their lives hypothesizing and experimenting in order to enhance all means of human life – whether in the medical, digital, electronic, or industrial fields – and make our lives easier to live. However, with the evolution of these advancements, a new view of life evolved as well. Scientists want to biologically modify the composition of human beings to create supernatural humans, while technicians and engineers aim as high as to incorporate robotics and humans together, creating a cybernetic organism, or a cyborg (Posthumanism, n.d.).…
