Be Healthy : Means that as practitioners we help and encourage the children to be healthy and make healthy choices by providing them with healthy meals and snacks at appropriate times. In my setting we provide the children with drink and water throughout the day as well as providing healthy meals.
Stay Safe: We ensure all the children that attend our setting are kept safe by having all staff CRB checked and we are encouraged to take any necessary training such going on first aid courses and child protection courses. If any safeguarding issues arise within the nursery then we go straight to the senior, deputy or the leaders. We keep the children safe by having a buzzer system which lets the parents into the nursery. We keep the children safe by carrying out risk assessment’s checking that all the equipment and play areas are safe for the children.
Enjoy and achieve: We provide the children with both child initiated and adult led activities. We do observation’s on the children so that we can plan activities accurately for the children’s individual needs and learning abilities, as I work with under 2's we do alot of free flow play. We make sure that we provide the children with a happy and safe environment that they are happy to come to and if the children are happy at nursery then this means that they can enjoy themselves and also it helps them to achieve and learn more while at nursery.
Make a positive contribution: We create a environment for the children that will help them to develop self confidence. We encourage the children to make their own choices and for them to know that us as practitioners are there to support them if they so need it. In our setting we have 3 rooms the babies in the baby room are from 3 months - 2 years, so we plan activities that promote their physical, language and communication and their personal, social and emotional development but this doesn't always go to plan as they are so young so free flow happens a lot during our days.

All practitioners will have a CRB check which is too make sure that you have no background of abusing children or any other criminal offences that could put the children in danger. Another way the safeguarding policy is used is by making sure that anyone who enters the setting including the parents, practitioners, children and visitors are signed in and out. This is so that the setting has a record of who is in the nursery at any one time so that if there is a fire drill a register can be done and all the people who are supposed to be there are accounted for. When a visitor arrives at the setting they should always be escorted and never be left alone with the children. This is for many reasons such like the children will not be familiar with them so it could make them anxious and upset. Also you may not know the visitor in great detail so cannot presume they will not hurt the children in any way and also in case they take any of the children they are not supposed…

My goal in the functional area of safe is to provide a safe indoor and outdoor environment. Young infants are placed on their backs when they are sleeping. The crib is free of blankets, toys, or other soft materials that could cause suffocation. Mobile infants are kept safe by making sure that there isn't anything that is small enough they could put in their mouths and swallow. Toys are checked daily for broken or loose parts. Toddlers are kept safe by showing them the proper use of toys. They are encouraged to follow safety rules such as walking instead of running and sitting on a chair instead of climbing on it. As a child care provider I always have to check toys and playground equipment for any damages that may injury the children in my care, not only do I have to check toys and equipment I must check under toys outside for any creatures that may harm any of the children in my care. Health and safety is monitored and maintained by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks. When ensure that this is done by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks on a regular basis and if any health and safety issues arise with the equipment or environment we will attend to these issues and recorded the information and remove any fault from the area and ensure that other members of staff are aware of these issues. Plug socket covers, safety gates and door stoppers are monitored and maintained by checking that plug socket covers are in all sockets and check that none are broken, if any plug socket covers are found broken they should be removed and replaced with new. When children arrive at the setting safety gates must be in place before children attended so that no children can leave the setting. Door stoppers must be put in place to ensure that children don’t trap their fingers in the door when going out and all members of staff must put these in place and if any fall of the door members of staff should replace them immediately. Personal protective equipment must be available at all times and all staff should use this when changing nappies, cleaning up sick and if a child is bleeding.
