1.1
Describe the duties and responsibilities of your own work role.
The day to day care and supervision of children aged 3months to a 1year. Planning and implementing with the staff team activities and resources to provide a rich learning environment. To be a key person I am responsible for a small group of around 6-8 children, observing and recording their learning and development. This involves taking pictures for their learning journals and commenting on their day to day activities. We also observe their current development to ensure they are at the right stage for their age in terms of speech & language. It also involves building a positive and supportive partnership with their parents/carers and families, respecting and valuing their cultures and beliefs. We aim to involve parents with all aspects of their child’s journey at Nursery including updating their individual learning plans termly. As a key worker I am heavily involved in this process, encouraging children to achieve their learning goals and to ensure I am up to date with all policies and procedures such as safeguarding, health and safety, the welfare requirements, manual handling, etc.

When I will be working with children, there is many duties and responsibilities I must carry out in order to care for their well being. This will include having a good knowledge of a child’s development. Therefore this will ensure that I am eligible to care for them, allowing me to keep them safe and know what is expected for the age. Meaning if a child is around the age of three and has not begun to speak must take precautions and let the nursery know of the this problem. I must also be able to work well with the parents of the children I care for so they can trust in me to care for the children once they are not there. Having this bond with the parents allows be to approach them with no fear and be confident in speaking to them about the child, but I must ensure that I keep a professional relationship with the parents and this will show that I give them the respect that the deserve. Furthermore I must always be on their side meaning I must not push my ideas and opinions across of how they wish for their children to be brought up, for example if they wish for their child to have a vegetarian diet I must follow there instructions.…

There are three main types of childcare settings; these are voluntary, statutory and private. Private settings are those which are set up to make the owner a profit. A few examples of these are private day nurseries, childminders, nannies and work place nurseries. The setting I am focusing on is a private day nursery. The nursery opened 1997 and operates from a private home. It is open 49 weeks of the year, opening from 9-6 five days a week. The setting is able to have 24 children on site at one time aged between one and five. The setting ensures that all children are warmly welcomed and ensure a safe and stimulating environment. On their website they say their aim is to promote a “home from home atmosphere”. The staff meets the children’s care and learning needs. This is done by carefully planning activities to meet all children’s needs and abilities. It is important that the staff build a good bond with the children’s parents/ carers as this builds up the trust between them. This is done by the setting having a good communication between the parents and the setting; they use daily diary sheets, home link books, parent’s evenings and eating plans to ensure that each child’s needs are met.…
