Data Protection Act
The Data Protection Act of 1998 controls the way information is handled and to gives legal rights to people who have information stored about them. The act covers both digital and physical records.
In the course of working as a childminder a lot of information will be acquired about the families you work with. A childminder is in a position of trust and it is of vital importance that any relevant information be confidential and not shared with others. In the case where information needs to be shared with someone eg. a Social Worker it is necessary that the written permission of the parent is obtained. The only exception to this rule is when sharing information with the parents would jeopardise the safety of the child.
Written records must be kept locked in a secure place and electronic records secured with a password so that other people don't have access to the information. Photos of the child can only be taken with the written permission of a parent.
