Cyrus’ Reign
The reign of Cyrus lasted about 29 and 31 years. Cyrus constructed his empire by conquering first, the Median Empire, then the Lydian Empire, and eventually the Neo-Babylonian Empire . Though he ruled and conquered them, he respected their customs and religions of those under him.
It is said that in universal history, the role of the Achaenmenid Empire, which he used to overthrow much of the world, founded by Cyrus lies in its very successful model for centralized administration and establishing a government working to the advantage and profit of its subjects.
Cyrus had conquered and dominated in the time of 522-486 B.C.
Cyrus is also remembered for all his accomplishments in human rights, politics, and military strategy, as well as his influence on both Eastern and
Western civilizations.
Early Life
Legends say that Cyrus was deserted of his noble birth right, though he reappeared to recover his royal position. Much of the history of his early life was lost or damaged, though he may have been born on 600-599 B.C. or
576-575 B.C.
Astyages was Cyrus’ grandfather and he wanted Cyrus murdered because he had a dream that he was going to one day overthrown him. A herdsman and his wife felt sorry for the newborn child and decided to raise
Cyrus themselves.
Cyrus grew up to marry the daughter of Pharnaspes, Achaemenian.
Together they had four children, Cambyses II, Bardiya, Atossa, and another daughter whose name is undetermained.
Relation to The Prince
Machiavelli mentions Cyrus in The Prince while discussing how a prince should always persist on being better or being more competent.
“A wise prince, therefore, should pursue such methods as there, never resting idol in times of peace, but strenuously seeking to turn them to count...” (39, The Prince)
