From these many legislations, child care settings develop policies, according to the Oxford online dictionary a policy is ‘A course or principle of action adopted or proposed by an organisation or individual’. Policies are a guide for all those involved in the setting, to ensure and endorse the well-being of all families, children and staff and provide a common understanding of how these things should be done within the setting. In terms of the safeguarding policies procedures and practices for safe working with children and young people, this commences at the recruitment stage. Checks are looked at during interview if the applicant has any gaps in employment and if they have any convictions. All staff undergoes an enhanced CRB disclosure check to ensure they are suitable to work with vulnerable adults and children. References are sought for all applicants. Applicants must have a satisfactory CRB and checked references before they commence working although they can work with a second member of staff until checks are carried out (adults only). If someone has a conviction this does not bar them from employment but the nature of the conviction would be considered and a decision made as to whether to employ the individual. All staff undergoes training in children & Young people within 12 months of employment whether or not they work with children and young people.
