DBYA Personal Statement
A person that has made me see my values and passions more than anyone would be my highschool art teacher, Ms. Shriner. When I was in highschool, I was the secretary for the club she ran, DBYEA (Daniel Boone Youth Education Association). Although I had no interest in becoming a teacher, I loved what she stood for her and her community involvement. She made me and many others feel like we were not too young and insignificant to do something. We grew into a family, and were a part of something greater than ourselves. You name it, we fundraised for it. Our club contributed over 10,000 dollars to one of the biggest Relay For life’s held in PA with a whopping total of 100,000 dollars total. Raised over 15,000 dollars to a 2 year old’s family for her leukemia treatments who’s parents use to go to our school by putting on a seussical which is Dr. Seuss stories, with dancing and music. Blood drives was one of the most important of our involvement within the community. Angela Hohl, was a 17 year old girl who died of leukemia that could not get enough …show more content…
It is the people you helped and how you’ve made an impact on their lives. If you have an idea and great people willing to work with you towards a cause, you can make a difference. These experiences made me who I am, and have made more compassionate. Civic engagement at Drexel hopefully entails volunteering at a local hospital in Philadelphia. I will continue my volunteering at home when I can. During my time here, I will be taking part in volunteering but not willingly contribute to the university goal to become the most civically engaged. I will not volunteer to make Drexel look better. That is not the purpose of volunteering. Drexel wants the recognizing but I want the difference the work is going to make. It would be a great goal to have for a university if it was made for the right

Another situation that I was made aware of was that families needed food and it surprised me to realize that there were kids in need of food that lived near me. I come from a fairly wealthy town and had not realized that there were so many families that lived near me in need of food. I cannot imagine being a young child and have to worry if my mom or dad was going to be able feed me dinner. This experience made me realize how important it is to donate to the local food pantry. Citizenship will be very important in my career because if you want to get good publicity for a business it is important to help the community. Citizenship will be even more important to me as a person because volunteering has a way of making me feel like I am helping making a positive change. When I get into my career I plan to donate to food pantries often because this experience made me realize that not all people have the means to support themselves. I actually plan to start volunteer at the food pantry in the summer because they seemed like they could use some help and the volunteers were very gracious that I was helping them out. I learned through this project that not…

My mindset is to attend a university which will help be blossom into a great community member and keep that close relationship to my faith. DBU has the foundation, mission, and character I am looking for, and has become my first choice in my next step in life. I admire the way DBU integrates the Christian faith and biblical values into the business college curriculum; I value having a place of worship near home. No matter what business career I choose, I’m certain DBU will prepare me to be a servant leader and an impact wherever I might go or work in the future; their quality of education and ACBSP accreditation is highly talked about in my school. Taking into consideration the competitive environment in the business world, I look forward to…

I am prove that “DECA is preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career ready”. Leadership, marketing, communication, and many other skills that DECA provides, are used in an abounding amount of careers. When I first joined DECA I knew I was outrageously introverted. I also knew that I had a passion for the study of the human body. As I learned more about what DECA truly is, I knew that DECA would help me reach my goal of attending medical school. Many people think DECA is strictly for students with an interest in the field of business and entrepreneurship; however, DECA means so much more. My DECA experiences have taught me how to lead a group, sell a product or idea, speak clearly, meet new friends, and many other skills…

The results of my hard work and the positive impact it creates on the people around me is a reward in itself. One of the most memorable instances in which I contributed to the greater good was during the summer of my freshman year where I volunteered at West Pines Community Church. That summer, myself and about 50 other volunteers set out to make an impactful difference in the…

As I have gained experience over the years working and volunteering in the mental health field, I have come to the realization that I have an overwhelming passion for working with individuals in need of social, emotional and physical support. If I were given the opportunity to become a DFPS Statewide Intake Worker, my greatest challenge would be ensuring that the children and adults in the home are receiving the appropriate love and attention that they need from their caregivers. As a family oriented individual, I believe that success begins in the home. My goal as a DFPS worker would be to help ensure that the people in need and their family can be successful, even in the most difficult situations. By successful, I am referring to the family receiving the support and resources they need from the community.…

As a particularly curious and proactive member of society, I consider myself to be civically engaged; although the degree of engagement can be argued. Personally, I believe that small things make up the larger picture, so my engagement is mostly interpersonal, as small interactions can set of chain reactions. Speaking out on issues with (or to) friends, politely engaging strangers in conversations and presenting different points of view, and constantly seeking to better myself is how I remain aware and knowledgeable on current issues, and also how I continue to learn new things and refine my thoughts. Not everyone is born to take center stage, and so we must all strive to do what we can, even if it’s simply a few words of encouragement or a…

With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. The CARE packages contained basic needs such as toothpaste and shampoo, and special items like nail polish and makeup. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.…

I learned many things about myself and the world around me. One major thing I learned serving breakfast to the homeless was how important it is to give back to the less fortunate. Something as simple as saying hello or handing them a napkin can put the biggest smile on someones face and make their day. Giving back should not be such a burden on people. Our generation today complains and complains. We think we have it so bad because we can't do things like have a logo on our jackets, but when you think about it, at least we have jackets. From this experience. I learned that giving back to others needs to be made a priority in my life. I realized how much I value community service and how important it is to me. Equally important, I learned the importance of faith. For some of these people, faith is all that they have. God is the only person they have to fall back on. For someone who lives on the streets without a home or a family, faith and prayer can mean the world to them. Another important thing that I learned about myself is how good helping others makes me feel. To know that I made a difference in the world and helped someone get through their day, as rough as it was, fills me with a sense of gratitude. This experience was a true eye-opener for…

I have collaborated with my fellow students in the National Honors Society to make a true difference in our community. We have come together many times as a group to form fundraisers and support charity events. It would not have had the same effect if I was the only one participating. Each member had a special purpose in making each event meaningful. The largest accomplishment I have witnessed while in the NHS was the food drive we did for a local food bank. We got the entire school involved and had students bringing in many varieties of food every day. We collected hundreds of cans of food and filled the back of a delivery truck entirely. We came together as an association and gave food to those less fortunate than ourselves. It was an astonishing…

My participation in Student Government has taught me important leadership skills I will be able to carry with me throughout, not only my college career, but my nursing career. Sports has taught me that hard work, discipline, and teamwork will not only defeat any obstacle that comes my way, but with the help and encouragement of others, we can come together as one and get the job done. My extracurricular activities have taught me that with the aid of others anything is possible. Through my community service volunteering at a local housing company for the mentally disabled, I have seen first-hand what the impact one person can make on another’s life. Helping and mentoring the mentally disabled who can’t do some tasks on their own has touched my heart and changed the way I appreciate life in many different aspects. It just reminds me of how fortunate I am to be able to help other, despite the time it takes to do so. The overall time I have sacrificed to do these extracurricular activities inside and outside of school has all been well worth it. Overall, the life lessons I have learned and the change in character I have gained from these activities are gifts I will be able to carry with me in able to achieve my goal.…
