First major Choreography “Jardi Tancat” which is Catalonian for “enclosed garden” by Nacho Duato performed in 1983 is based on Catalan folk tales. The work explores the hardship and sorrow of the Catalonian people as they struggle working in the barren, water stricken Catalonian land. Throughout Jardi Tancat you can see the presentation of contemporary dance, with a background of classical techniques; this is evident through the training accompanied. Throughout the performance you can see the influence of social, historical and cultural climate. Also the choreographer’s background, philosophical underpinnings, experience and intentions have an impact on the way the Nacho Duato’s piece came together.…
The ongoing debate between dancers and football fanatics: is dance really comparable to football? When asked if one believes dance is considered a sport many jump straight to the conclusion that dance is not, when in reality dance is just as much of a sport when compared to the all American favorite sport football. In comparison to football, dance has many similar aspects, but also has many differences such as their appearance, how each athlete presents themselves, and what they’re catching.…
Dance. How can you survive a University with what people think is an easy major. If you ask someone who has zero dance experience, I bet seventy-five percent of the time people are going to say that it is an easy subject. When someone says that it is easy, I laugh at them and tell them that they have no idea on what they are talking about. There is technique that you have to learn, movements that your body does not want to do because it is not used to it. Then the sense of rhythm that need to be on point for the actions. It is harder than it sounds. When you first start dancing you break down the mussels and then build them back up to gain more muscle. I also laugh when athletes say that Dance is not a sport. I tell them to go to a dance class for a day and see if they…
Defining something as a "sport" is not always as easy as you might think. This is because there really aren't any official guidelines as to what makes a sport a sport. Personally, I believe that a true sport should consist of team effort toward a goal, physical fitness and activity, and some form of formal scoring system.…
What is the true definition of Sport and Dance? Sport is the activity of which a person or team competes against each other and involves the physical effort of skill to master. Dance is the series of movement that matches the speed and rhythm of a piece of music. Also, injures that dance and sports share. Therefore, Dancing should be considered a sport because it has the qualifying requirements of a sport.…
The body is intricately made and can do amazing things. Dancers tap into the muscles of their body that many people do not know exist, much like athletes. A dancer trains hard, spends hours in the studio, is always looking to improve their skills, and engages in competition. The same can be said about football, basketball, and baseball players. People assume that dance is not as challenging or aggressive on the body as other sports. But I, as a dancer, can validate that it is just as hard and uses large groups of muscles to complete certain steps, or moves. Dance has potential to be classified as a sport by society, when all evidence and support is considered.…
Once upon a time there was dance! In dance there are many forms. There is Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip hop, partner dancing, modern, and country and western. Dance originated many, many years ago. People used it to express emotions and stories. As time went on so did new dance techniques. Ballet came into the world around the 15th century Italian Renaissance and it slowly became the backbone for all dancing styles. As Albert Einstein said “dancers are the athletes of God.”…
Even though there are various types of intriguing dances in the world today, circus dances, such as; aerial modern dance, flying trapeze, lyra, fire poi, acro, and trampoline are going to my main emphases for this paper. Aerial modern dance is a unique form of dance that will revive your soul. Flying trapeze is exhilarating in it self and is such a beautiful form of dance. Fire poi is great for your inner chi, such a fun way to get yourself moving. Acro dancing is a way to partner up for an usual type of dance that will be sure to give you an adenine rush. Trampoline dancers are definitely one of the most extreme and freeing dances out there. These circus dances are just now becoming known and are for anyone who likes to flow to the rhythm of the beat.…
The first reason why dancing can be called a sport is you practice. When you sign up for sports you know you practice for competitions. When you play that sport it’s mostly what you do. You practice 90% of the time and the other 10% is competitions. In dance it’s the same way. When you do dance you practice and practice and practice all the time if you really care you even practice at home too. Dancing is like football and hockey, not in every single way but close.…
A lot of people especially the male gender would not really consider dancing a sport but I sure do. It is not as easy as it looks the technique is extremely difficult and takes lots of practice to perfect such rigorous techniques. I started dancing when I was about five for my private school at the time, I did ballet and jazz but when I went to public school I had stopped. Then I traveled to Nigeria and stayed their two years with my Aunt. While I was schooling their I also did a little dancing quite different it was more cultural, after that I came back to America and when I was a freshman in high school I audition for my high school’s drill team. I spent the next four years dancing at football games, multiple pep-rally’s, different contests and I even got to perform at the reliant stadium for our play-off game which was extremely exciting. So I would consider this a sport because I am pretty sure all those boys who would say it wasn’t a sport sure could not do a double pirouette.…
What constitutes a sport being a sport is a major topic of debate. One such sport that is often questioned is cheerleading. Some people believe that cheerleading is a sport, while other people argue that cheerleading is not a sport. I believe that competitive cheerleading is in fact a sport. It is even said that 65% of all the catastrophic injuries in womens sports in the past 25 years have been cheerleading injures (Renee).…
Wikipedia defines dance as an “art form that refers to body movement, usually rhythmic and to music”. Dance can be used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. The evolution of dance runs deep into history and while it is hard to find the first instance of dance, we know it certainly has been an important part of many cultures for a long time. Dance has been used in ceremonies, rituals, celebration and entertainment since the earliest existence of cultures and societies. Dance does not stop with humanity as many animals have their own form of “dance” as a way of communication. Humans can also use dance as a non-verbal way to communicate. In fact, dance has a broad range of its level of participation. It can be participatory, social, performed, ceremonial, competitive or erotic. A few sports incorporate the elements of dance such as ice skating, gymnastics, etc. Since dance has such a broad range of purpose and participation, the movements can be without significance or be specific to a gesture. Dance can express or embody ideas, emotions or even tell a story. The definition of dance definitely depends on the social, culture and moral constraints of a society or even individuals. One thing that is certain is that music and dance were created and performed together. Throughout the ages and…
There are people who would say that dancers don’t do half as much as a football or basketball player does so dance can’t be a sport. That’s incorrect. Dancers put in as much time and effort as other athletes. You can’t compare a dancer to a football player just like you can’t compare a basketball player to a cheerleader, or a tennis player to a golf player. They are all different sports that consist of different criteria, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a sport. Another issue is people who claim that anyone is able to dance. That is an invalid argument as well. That’s the same as saying anyone can also throw a football or dribble a basketball. Not everyone can dance and even if they could, would they be able to win in a competition or get points for their team? The same with other sports. I can throw a football, but can I play in an actual game and throw down the field to score a winning touchdown? Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you’re fully capable of using that skill and competing with it in a serious…
