Dance Memoir
Whenever someone asks me what I do, my first response is always “I’m a dancer”. Although this seems like a fairly simple answer, this means much more than a statement of my hobbies. Dance has been a part of my life since I was five years old. Ever since I can remember, I was in a dance studio surrounded by mirrors and a ballet barres. The classical music has become a part of my day to day soundtrack, I count in eights, and I live in leotards and tights. Stepping into a dance studio was like stepping into an extension of my home; which was always nice, because I moved around a lot as a child. I was born in Minnesota, moved to Wisconsin, then to Pennsylvania, and now I reside in North Carolina. I became accustomed to change, and learned to enjoy …show more content…
The atmosphere that existed within my dance studio was one so utterly supportive and positive, that my love for dance grew stronger. The girls that I spent hours each week with, became sisters to me. We were able to support one another in class, as well as within our personal lives. By spending so much time with such wonderful people, I’d like to think that I have become a better person. My time dancing at Miss Charity’s Shuffles and Chaînes has taught me how to love myself, and everything that makes me, me. It has taught me freedom of expression, and the value in making art out of what matters to me. It has taught me how to respect other opinions and ideas, even when they are different from my own. It has taught me the value in friendship, and that a healthy support system is the perfect thing to end a stressful day with. It has taught me discipline, kindness, teamwork, and many other valuable traits. The thought of leaving dance is one that I cannot fathom, and it is for that reason that I will try and keep it a part of my life as long as I see fit. I may not want to pursue a career in dance, but I can’t see myself abandoning something that has become a part of who I am. Without dance, I am not Taylor Ann Ruzewski, and I wouldn’t want to be anyone different that the person I am

Unlike Sidney, I did not choose to leave my education to accomplish my dreams. I can't dance. Most of the time, I shy away from dancing. But surprisingly, I have a picture of students giving a dance performance at Grinnell. A simple picture with enthusiastic dancers that I received during a college talk captures what I want out of college: a place where I can let go of my inhibitions and find fulfillment in anything that strikes my fancy, somewhere I can immerse myself in the multitude of opportunities and activities available and experience the magic captured by that picture.…

Ever since I was a little girl I dreamt about being on the Indianettes dance team. Dancing has been a part of my life from the age of four up until now. When I was younger I was not the best dancer but I loved it, and my mom already paid for my classes so i was kind of stuck doing it anyways. My eighth grade year I was preparing to tryout for the Indianettes, I was stretching, working on my technique, and working on my jumps and turns. It turns out that the old coach Sheri Bradley quit and the Indianettes had a new fairly inexperienced coach named MariAnn Barfus. I wasn't very confident about making the team. Long story short, I ended up making it along with Jaidyn Harris, Hannah Hyde, Daphnie Colpron, Carson Davis, Becca Osterhout, Mechelle…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

Learning to balance my schedule and manage my time was a key factor in my everyday schedule. From missing days of school to compete at regionals, nationals, or worlds, I always stayed on top of my school work. As I grew older, dance became more challenging, as my love for it diminished. I used to be one of the best dancers my age division, but everyone seemed to be catching up to me. It was frustrating knowing that all of my hard work was not paying off, and every loss made me more discouraged. I pushed through the losses for many years, and finally decided to take time off. I found myself back in the studio only ten months later, ready to work harder than ever. My time off made me realize how important dance was in my life, and I much I needed…

Within the dance community, there exist many unfortunate psychological problems, especially among young girls. Recently, the studio I attend preformed a dance worship night. Mere minutes before we walked onstage, I could hear a collection of anxious voices from around the dressing room. “Could you tell me if my arabesque is high enough?” “I wish I had better arches.” “Guys, look at how bad my middle splits are today!” Even though our teachers constantly reminded us to “Dance for the Lord alone”, we continued to harass ourselves about our own faults and weaknesses. This perfectionist behavior pervades nearly every styles of dance, from hip-hop to lyrical. Dancers constantly strive for a stronger, more flexible, more controlled body.…

Because I was always one of those kids that never felt comfortable doing any sport, when I discovered that I had a talent for dancing, I was overjoyed. I started dancing during my fifth grade year of school. Immediately I became infatuated with the art. Working very hard my sixth grade year enabled me to join my academy’s dance company. One day during my musical theatre class while doing a combo something wasn’t right. My right leg had a twinging pain and when I did the big kick at the end of the combo, I knew I had pushed myself too far. What should have been the beginning of a long dance career turned into a very long year and a half search of trying to find a way to heal whatever was wrong. It was an experience that I’ll never forget.…

In the beginning of the story, she is introduced as a child with next to nothing and is portrayed to have psychopathic traits. Towards the end of the story, there are positive changes in her character. All my life I have found myself following in my sister’s footsteps. During her high school years, she was on the drill team. Therefore, I made it one of my dreams and goals to be a part of it as well. I had danced for about five years prior to trying out, and I was certain that I would make the team. After trying out, my friends and I all gathered together to open the letters which would tell us if we did or did not make the team. Unfortunately, I did not. I was devastated for several weeks after tryouts. As time passed; however, I realized how much of a blessing it was to not make that team. Not making the drill team has opened up doors to many different opportunities that I would not have had if I were a part of the team. I would not have…
