Back in summer of 2014 all of our friends were so excited for the new year. We were going to be in 8th grade, at the top of the food chain at our Junior High. Not only were we excited about all the different things we were going to be able to do as 8th grader, like take chinese or year round spanish if you're into that. But what we were focusing on the eye of the prize, the 8th grade dance. The best part about this dance was that it wasn’t any ordinary dance, everyone had to be dressed up in nice clothes or otherwise they would be asked to leave. This…

Throughout the past two years at Staten Island Academy, this learning environment has given me many opportunities that I could not have gotten at any other school. I'm not the most athletic, but I do very much enjoy playing sports. Here at the Academy middle school, I was able to experience any sport that I wanted to play, without a tryout system. The music and theater program here has given me countless opportunities to better my skills as an actor and a baritonist. I have been able to act in two plays, "Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr." and "Cyrano deBurgershack." They helped me learn the ins and outs of acting, as I was a beginner before I came to the Academy. In the orchestra, I have appeared in 5 concerts, all of which have been immensely successful thanks to our conductor, Ms. Wheatley. There have also been many truly amazing teachers that have guided me to academic success. Specifically, Mr. Levine helps me to understand…

This organization is an extremely diverse, unique, and talented group of dancers. The dance concert had nine different pieces that were all different styles of dance. “I feel like [the dance] is a good opportunity to spread some diversity and get to know different people,” freshman Justin Stephens said. “I feel like it’s going to be a little different, but I feel like it should be the same type of traditional dance we’ve had before, like homecoming or prom last year.”…

Learning to balance my schedule and manage my time was a key factor in my everyday schedule. From missing days of school to compete at regionals, nationals, or worlds, I always stayed on top of my school work. As I grew older, dance became more challenging, as my love for it diminished. I used to be one of the best dancers my age division, but everyone seemed to be catching up to me. It was frustrating knowing that all of my hard work was not paying off, and every loss made me more discouraged. I pushed through the losses for many years, and finally decided to take time off. I found myself back in the studio only ten months later, ready to work harder than ever. My time off made me realize how important dance was in my life, and I much I needed…

Upon joining my sorority earlier this semester I never would have thought I would be dancing and making a fool out of myself in front of hundreds of people on Green Street. Here I was though on November 1st, after practicing for at most three days with the other girls and Hockey team, ready to get on stage. My grand big is a dance major so she convinced me to join the Spurs and Struts team because they did not have enough people and I have a hard time saying no. This performance ended up being one of the scariest, but most fun experiences I have ever had. During Spurs and Struts I had lost my dance partner last minute so I had to dance a part alone. Also, I could not grab my rally towel that was tucked in my leggings so that was embarrassing…

In attending Entrances and Exit presented by Grossmont colleges dance program, I found there to be many interesting routines. All of the performances were well put together, although there were a few times when I was just like “What?” Every performance I found to be dreadful was always followed by a performance that would grasp my attention again. There were a couple pieces that I found extremely magnificent like “My name is Sam” choreographed by Nancy Boskin-Mullen, “Toy Makers Can-Can” choreographed by Colleen Shipkowski, and “In the wild” choreographed by Melissa Aldo. Though, there were many entertaining performances, these three stood out to me the most because with all of them I found myself very engaged in the dance.…

Collaboration dance pieces are always a joy to watch, especially when the performers dance as if it was their last performance. On December 11, 2013, I had a chance to witness the Collaboration Concert of the dance departments of the two phenomenal schools of Cass Technical High School and Renaissance High School. And may I state, both schools brought the talent that resembles that of professionals. The concert involved thirteen performances of the young, but talented dancers. Renaissance Dance Workshop, Cass Tech Dance Workshop, Renaissance Dance 5, Cass Tech Dance 5, and Cass Tech Dance 3 performed.…

Unfortunately, I got cut after the dance call. Before I left, Ben Berry walked into the room and informed those who were called back to stay and politely thanked those who were cut for their time. The audition in entirety is quite enjoyable and not as competitive as I anticipated. However, I had not foreseen the intensity of the dance call and was over-dressed, which resulted in being distracted that wasted a lot of my energy. My ballet slippers didn’t put me in advantage because of some “tappy" steps (it is time to invest in a pair of jazz shoes). Most of the dancers are still in college because the company encourages undergraduates to audition. Peregrine Theatre provides opportunities for college undergraduates to build up their resume with regional and professional credit. Being my first professional audition, it was overall very pleasant and encouraging. I learnt about the process of musical theatre auditions on a smaller scale that’s not overwhelming nor cutthroat. I’m looking forward to going on more auditions next year with more dance…

There are somethings that I need to overcome and I will do that by being myself when I dance. There’s still many things I need to learn in life. And when I show people how to dance in such a creative style it makes me feel good because I love the craft and there are a lot of people that quit…
