Personal Narrative: Kansas City Ballet
Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. Even though I was practicing outside of the dance studio, I still felt like I was not as good as the other dancers. I was still feeling like I had to work harder than the other dancers, as well. The people that I was dancing with had been dancing since they were three; whereas, I started dancing when I was eight years old. Even though it might not seem like that big of a difference, to me it made a huge difference.…

My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. Learning to balance my schedule and manage my time was a key factor in my everyday schedule. From missing days of school to compete at regionals, nationals, or worlds, I always stayed on top of my school work. As I grew older, dance became more challenging, as my love for it diminished. I used to be one of the best dancers my age division, but everyone seemed to be catching up to me. It was frustrating knowing that all of my hard work was not paying off, and every loss made me more discouraged. I pushed through the losses for many years, and finally decided to take time off. I found myself back in the studio only ten months later, ready to work harder than ever. My time off made me realize how important dance was in my life, and I much I needed…

Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…

Because I was always one of those kids that never felt comfortable doing any sport, when I discovered that I had a talent for dancing, I was overjoyed. I started dancing during my fifth grade year of school. Immediately I became infatuated with the art. Working very hard my sixth grade year enabled me to join my academy’s dance company. One day during my musical theatre class while doing a combo something wasn’t right. My right leg had a twinging pain and when I did the big kick at the end of the combo, I knew I had pushed myself too far. What should have been the beginning of a long dance career turned into a very long year and a half search of trying to find a way to heal whatever was wrong. There are somethings that I need to overcome and I will do that by being myself when I dance. There’s still many things I need to learn in life.
