Dance Theatre Critique Analysis
Critique Analysis at the Dance Theatre
On Sunday November 22, 2015, I went to the performance hall at Brookhaven Community College. Because I have to watch all six performances but only chose four of them to critique. I went by myself coming in from the left side and decided to sit in the eleventh row from the stage. On the left side of the stage there are three speakers and a long stand with three medium size lights. On the right side of the stage are four speakers and a long stand with three medium lights on it. Four white lines on the black ground. The curtain is red with flower shape on it. I will be critiquing over three instead of four which are “Heretofore”, “Smother Smolder” and “Walks Right In, Walks Right Out”(Intermission).
The first dance that I will write about is called “Heretofore”. Was choreographed by Brianna Cattell, the music is by The Irrepressibles which is pop genre to me and the dancers names are Elisa Briones and Amber

The music was right on point with the dance. As the music was playing the movement followed right alone with it. They were wearing white thick muscles shirts with white line blue square shorts.
The second dance is called “Walks Right in, Walks Right Out” (Intermission). Was choreographed by Deb Jones, music by Royal Crown Revue singing a song called “The Walkin’ Blues” and the dancers names are Andrea Bertrand, Melissa Klare and Chris Maclver. I think the genre is jazz because of the sound, dance and the jazz hands and the end of the performance. Abstract because it’s just dancing.
I saw repetition: when they did the shift ball changed. Like move foot forward hit the heel of foot then hit front of the foot. Repetition: when they change placed like a triangle shape. Staging: I think Chris and the girl with the red dress came out stage left and the girl with blue dress came out stage right. Start dancing center

A brief moment is seen in the first subsection – where the dancers break away from the tight formation and precise synchronisation and go into spontaneous looking duets and solos In the mean time the previously religious lyrics change to “there is trouble all over this world...”. As the lyrics return to “I’ve been buked” a strong sense of community is…

The object of the first task set was to create a performance in response to the stimulus given. The stimulus we received was a short passage from a story describing a circus, the description allowed us to freely explore our different interpretations because it was a broad and different approach to the typically happy and childlike setting of a circus. As a whole the class responded with quite abstract and solemn pieces, I feel the physical theatre reflected the tone of the stimulus well, all of the responses tended to lean towards drawing fear from the audience, for example instead of limiting the use of space to a typical theatre styled front on stage setting the use of proxemics broadened when groups branched out and included the audiences space during their performance, this gave the piece a threatening edge and popped the comfortable bubble that the audience would’ve usually been used to and expected.…

The dance consisted of: “(1) the medicine man, who sits by a fire in front of the line of dancers and burns angelica root to the accompaniment of incantations; (2) the singer, kdta"an, who leads the song from the center of the line of dancers; (3) two side singers, who accompany the leader in the chorus; (4) the four or more side dancers, ya'd,'lyeortakttdjidi'lyE, who carry the beat by rhythmic stamping; and (5) the four flint carriers, hodje'wana'wai, who do a special dance in front of the line” (Goldschmidt et al., 108). The selected dancers who are outfitted by the designated leaders are then “line up before the medicine man in the order in which the leaders want them, and they receive their deerskins and the final touches to their costumes” (Goldschmidt et al., 108). They then enter the ceremonial dancing ground, lead by the medicine man and take up their selected…

Dancing is an art. It is a creative way for people to express their feelings through movements and rhythm. From the 19th century to the 21st, dancing has evolved from the traditional modern dancing featuring the waltz, to urban dancing including all pop, hip-hop, and freestyle dancing. During the twentieth century in America, dance became the main type of entertainment. The sound of excitement was what I heard when I walked in. The sound of proud parents praising their children in the play, the sounds of students dreading their drama ISAs, the sounds of rushed footsteps, the sounds of the crowd settling down, the Sound of Music in its beginning. Last Wednesday, January 27th, 2016 I made my way to the City Playhouse to see my first CHAT school play, and I was looking forward to see what was in store for the audience that night! From the opening of the curtains to the final bows and thank yous of the cast, I was hooked on the convincing costumes, incredible acting, and extravagant sets. This made the audience more interested in the play since there was such a variety of costumes, and it created a whole other…
