Dangers of Alcohol and Addiction Among Teenagers Underage drinking and addiction have become one of the largest social issues among teenagers in America today. Although more than half of high schoolers drink and do drugs on a regular basis, the problem is that they are not aware of how dangerous alcohol and drug addiction can really be. The reality is that drugs and alcohol are often the cause of many problems among teenagers, they ruin the lives of teenagers, and are now the most serious problems among teenagers. Alcohol and drug abuse is a leading cause of teen death or injury related to car crashes, suicides, violence, and drowning.
Underage drinking is also a major factor in fatal car accidents and according to statistics e ach year, almost 2,000 people under the age of 21 die in car crashes in which underage drinking is involved. Not only is alcohol involved in nearly half of all the violent deaths involving youth, but it decreases teens’ abilities to pay attention and have difficulty with memory.Drinking alcohol can also alter the brain development and cause lingering cognitive defects. Also teens who drink are more likely to engage in sexual activity, have unprotected sex, have sex with a stranger, or be the victim or perpetrator of a sexual assault. The changes in the brain interfere with the ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control their behavior, and the teens may not feel normal without them.
Underage drinking also lead to a rise in the suicide rate among teenagers and according to statistics more than three times the number of eighthgrade girls who drink heavily said they have attempted suicide compared to girls in that grade who do not drink. Drug use can cause or mask other emotional problems, like anxiety , depression , mood swings, or hallucinations (for example, hearing or seeing things).
