The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and opinions on concussions of high school coaches from a geographi- cally large yet rural state in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States. Few medical issues in sport are more important, or have had as much publicity recently, as concussions. The exposure gleaned from tragic health issues among professional athletes post- concussion has motivated college and professional sport agencies to modify and enact strict guidelines in the diagnosis and treatment of suspected concussions. Yet underdiagnosis and mistreatment by some (former University of Michigan coach in 2014) highlight the need for continued education and enforcement of the current guide- lines. Obviously, when a head…

In any sprinting event, there is a definite need to have a fresh start. Safety in sports is a vital issue not only in football, but also in every sport. Concussions are amongst the numerous neurological injuries which might occur during football. SRC (sport-related concussions) can arise alone or in an amalgamate mix with brachial plexus or cervical spine injuries. In the US, estimates of 300,000 sport-related concussions are reported annually. Research has shown that football is the most frequently affected sport with 47% of players injured. It has been determined that retired players greatly suffer from Alzheimer syndrome than any other group. The movie concussion was the first time of the correlation between concussions and football. As I read Nationwide Children’s article, “Concussion in sports”, allowed me to increase my knowledge. Throughout the article, the author categorized what is a concussion and how it affects players. During reading, I found that concussions are a serious issue in sports, because it can cause severe brain damage to an athlete. This is concerning because the brains is one of the most important parts of a person’s body and if effected it could change a person life forever. Furthermore, I found it upsetting that the NFL does not make the risk of playing football known. Although, I understand the NFL provides minorities with opportunities to become successful.…
In a country that thrives on competition it is no wonder Americans have embraced football as their favorite sport. Every weekend during football season, millions line up, tune in, or change the channel to watch their favorite teams do battle for 60 minutes. It is a rough physical game and at the collegiate and professional levels, played by some of the worlds best athletes. There are many dangers involved when participating in such a sport. Rarely will a player go through a game without being hurt in some capacity. This is part of the game and everyone involved knows it. Because of this, players often have to be the judge of whether they are “Injured”, or “hurt.” The difference being that someone who is just hurt can still perform physically and should be able to return to the game. However if a player is injured, this means that they have been hurt to the point where they are not physically able to play, or to the point that further play could escalate the injury into something much more serious. For most injuries this distinction is easy to make, for instance a sprained ankle can either be ran on or it cant, depending on the extent of the sprain. If a player suffers a concussion though, it can be much more difficult for that player to consider himself injured.…

The informative article "Hard Knocks" By Gabriel Charles Tyler found in upfront magazine, the infographic, titled “How Many G’s”, and the youtube video labeled "Concussion Hazards in Youth Football" (Dr. Drew interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta,…

Dr. Bennet Omalu is a Pathologist in Pittsburgh who studies the brain. While working here, Dr.Omalu discovered a new disorder that he named Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE. Webster was living out of his car, he would tase himself with a taser just to go to sleep. He was suffering from severe back pain, dementia, depression, and amnesia. He became angry with his wife and was very confused about a lot of things, he could barely answer any questions because of the loss of memory. Dr.Omalu figured out that this was a normal brain and all he wanted to do was “fix this brain”.…

Football is a great game to play, it is the ultimate in team sports, however there are some dangers to the sport that I have loved for over 30 years. I have friends some who have played right here at Temple U and have made it to the NFL and others had great collage careers. That’s why I found the article Simple Blood Tests for Rapid Concussion Diagnosis in the Scientific American an interesting read. Professional Football Players have been thrust into the spotlight because of concussions and the effects they have. Most notably in May of 2012 Junior Seau of the San Diego Chargers committing suicide due to the effects of head trauma or concussions.…
A concussion is when the brain bounces against the skull after someone’s head is hit or jolted. Massive swelling spreads through the brain and continues with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, irritability to light and sound, and even blurred vision. People who have had a concussion in the past may find that it takes longer to recover from their current injury. A blow to the head more than one time has a higher risk for brain damage. No pharmacological treatment exists, but people may use pain medications that are prescribed for headaches.…
