Dave Stuart Teachers Student And Sleep Summary
The main idea that is acclaimed by Dave Stuart Jr. in the article, “Teachers, Student, and Sleep,” is that sleep affects performance and that there are many factors that affect sleep. He puts forth statements talking about how sleep can affect performance, health, and mood. He also states many reasons sleep quality and quantity can be skewed; those include the blue light from electronics, exercised, eating habits, and the amount of natural daylight you are exposed to. Concluding the article’s ideas, sleep has enormous importance but is extremely fragile.
According to Stuart, the light from electronic screens has a negative outlook on sleep. Stuart states that screen time “is probably the easiest thing my students (and I) can work on” (3).

    This paper is a summary of two handouts that test our sleep habits and determine if the amount of sleep is enough for our needs. These explanations are all pulled from personal experience and our book Exploring Psychology by David Myers. There are several theories used in this paper that are unproven but are supported by many researchers as credible. Sleep protects theory suggests that through many years of our species the animals that slept during the night time hours survived (Siegel, 2009). Also the sleep helps us recuperate theory suggests that sleep helps us restore and repair brain tissue (Gilestro et al., 2009; Siegel, 2003; Vyazovskiy et al., 2008). Then the sleep helps restore and rebuild our fading memories of the day’s experience theory that says sleep consolidates our memories-it strengthens and stabilizes neural memory traces (Racsmany et al., 2010; Rasch & Born, 2008). Followed by the sleep feeds creative thinking theory that suggests sleep improves creative thinking and even has inspired many researchers (Ross, 2006). More common pace is the boost that a good night’s sleep gives us (Wagner et al., 2004). Finally sleep supports growth theory which shows during sleep the pituitary gland releases growth hormone that can improve muscle development in the body (James Maas and Rebecca Robbins, 2010).     Sleep deprivation is a common occurrence in modern culture. Every day there seems to be twice as much work and half as much time to complete it in. This results in either extended periods of wakefulness or a decrease in sleep over an extended period of time. While some people may like to believe that they can train their bodies to not require as much sleep as they need, this belief is false. Sleep, by definition, is the natural periodic suspension of voluntary bodily functions and complete or partial suspension of consciousness, during which the powers of the body are restored (Ratcliff & Van Dongen, 2009).     Sleep is essential to the body and its functions, promoting bodily rest and rejuvenation in the neurons and other cells that are replaced or repaired during times of sleep. Sleep has been proposed to conserve energy, detoxify the brain, and control thermoregulation within the brain ( Maquet 2001).     This study was done to identify the relationship between sleep deprivation and a student’s academic performance in areas such as GPA, class attendance, and incomplete assignments. 557 people were used for this with 35.7% being male and 64.3% being female. And the average age of the subjects being 19. The participants of the study were asked to complete several surveys to determine if they qualified for the study. A demographic survey asked about their GPA and the courses they dropped, withdrew from, or failed to complete. This was done to judge the student’s previous academic levels. Next, they took what is called the GDI to determine the student’s levels of depression. Students who showed abnormally high levels of depression were removed from the study to be further analyzed. The students remaining had scores of average or below average levels of depression. The final test was the PSQI, which is a self-report survey to determine the subjects sleep patterns. Using these self-report surveys the conductors of the experiment were able to determine that there is a relationship between quality of sleep and academic performance.…
