David Brooks 'Essay' It's Not About You

In David Brooks’ essay “It’s Not about You” he addresses graduates facing a world outside of school. These graduates face difficulties such as finding their passion for something and structuring their own lives. However, these issues vary from person to person depending on personal experiences throughout life. Every person is raised with different morals and beliefs. The behavior of someone traces back to who they looked up to while growing up, and what they believed was right and wrong, as well as what actions were taken for those behaviors that were inappropriate. Having structure growing up leads to a structured life as an adult. Living a structured life to me, will help stay on track with life, and the decisions I make as I grow as a person.
I think college is the best way to find your passion in life because it opens the door to many opportunities, and allows you to explore many different options.
It allows us to meet new people and start over, making new memories that will live on forever. College allows us to explore different career interests and find what is the best match for us. Once graduating from high school, attending college is what is expected and ideal to be successful, which is not always the case. Having a passion for something in life influences the way you will work towards a dream you have always wanted to achieve, and the determination you have to reach it. This just the beginning of a new journey we have ahead of us, and although we are at the time of our lives where the decisions we make every day has an impact on our future, we are better off deciding what to do in life while we are still
young. Research shows the behavior of a child is very strongly influenced on how well their family operates. I think children that grow up with parents who stay on top of their child’s actions and behaviors will limit decisions that are frowned upon. I was raised knowing what I should and shouldn’t do, and understanding there would be a consequence if something was done that was wrong. Growing up in a house with structure has shaped me into the person I am today, knowing that going to school to get an education will get me to where I need to be to become successful. I am very grateful to have such amazing parents that taught me what I needed to know in order to become the most successful person I could be. I was always told that in order to have a steady job I had to attend college and work hard in order to achieve the goal I wanted to reach. I am happy to say, that staying determined has gotten me to where I am today, and where I hope to be in the future. Graduates face many difficulties each and every day, whether its finding a passion for something or finding the right structure for your life. We will all find out what works best for us, and live each day by that. We are growing more and more as a person each day, and making new decisions about the way we want to live our lives, hopefully for the best. We all might not be perfect but that is what we are going to figure out by following our dreams and making them come true.
