In Richard Connell’s thrilling short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, an uneasy mood is constructed by Rainsford’s illusive adventure on Ship Trap Island. Many moments in the short story help build up a feeling of uneasy, one being when Winston uses a simile to describe the evil of the atmosphere, saying that the air “ was actually poisonous”, and that he felt a “mental chill, a sort of sudden dread” when the ship neared the island (Connell 1). The author makes the reader feel uneasy by making just the atmosphere itself seem evil and dangerous with the simile comparing the air to something that kills and is to be avoided. Readers also naturally pick up the feeling of dread from Whitney, which significantly helps in building…

However fractures have emerged in the cabinet on various issues such as the economy and Europe, issues that the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have traditionally differed on. Nick Clegg has also been under a lot of pressure by his party over his apparent lack of influence on Government part, leading to some questioning why they are still in the coalition. This was evident when Cameron vetoed a EU financial treaty in December 2011 without…
Both Thatcher and Cameron have tried hard to reduce the countries debt. Thatcher sold off many government owned industries. However, Cameron has to go about this in a different way as Thatcher had already sold most of the industries, although he did sell off the post office. This is very right wing of the two, and certainly pulls their governments closer in terms of similarity.…
Firing and hiring who ever the pm wants can lead to opposition and arguments within the party. The pm cannot always do as they wish as there can be consequences to thoughtless firing. Also looking at the current coalition Cameron cannot use…
Can a man be driven from humble humanity to gross inhumanity by circumstance or situation? What effect do one's choices and training have on his morals? At some point in our lives we will all be forced to answer questions similar to these, and two characters in Connell's story "The Most Dangerous Game" are not exempt from these life decisions. Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff are both wealthy, both are hunters, and eventually both men are put into situations where critical choices must be made. The choices the men make are derived from different situations, but both have similar results.…
Parallels can be drawn between Cameron and his predecessor, Margaret Thatcher: Cameron is a supporter of the free market economy; has voiced his support of foreign investment; supports a competitive market which brings benefits like jobs and cheaper prices. Cameron has spoken publicly about the need for the free market economy and said that they were the “best imaginable force for improving human wealth and happiness”.…
The extent to which government are able to exert meaningful control over the economy is subject to the power government has. In most Mixed economy such as the UK, government usually has control over Fiscal policies, which is the use of government spending and taxation to influence the economy, however how much they spend depends on the party that is governing the economy at that time. Traditionally Labour is viewed as “tax and spend” party, whilst Conservative encourages Free trade, deregulation of the economy, and lower taxes. They aim to reduce government spending and national debt. Nevertheless, government has to consider the wider economy and the global financial market before resulting in polices as the policies they implant can result in an economy that is either booming or an economy which is on the verge to bust. Government may lack control over the UK economy, due to their membership with the European Union, which has created many legislation that has made it difficult for the UK government to entrench policies nationally. In additional, Government no longer has control over interest rates, which means they no longer have control over the supply and demand for money but The Bank of England is accountable to government, so if government wishes they could intervene. In this essay, I will outline few of the main reasons that enable government to exert control over the economy, I will also evaluate these points along with reasons that prevent government from controlling the UK economy.…
Marc Bekoff once said, “These enthusiasts often like to hang signs that say ‘Gone Fishin’’ or ‘Gone Huntin’’. But what these slogans really mean is ‘Gone Killing’”. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford falls into the water on Shiptrap Island. He goes in search for food and finds a palatial chateau. General Zaroff gives him food and clothes. But, then Rainsford finds out about General Zaroff’s game and wants to leave the island immediately and instead of letting him go, the general wants to hunt Rainsford. In the end, Rainsford ends up winning the “game” and gets to sleep in the bed at the palatial chateau. Even though General Zaroff seems civilized with his polite actions, he is actually uncivilized because he is mentally unstable.…

Question: Discuss the characterizations of Rainsford and General Zaroff in “The Most Dangerous Game.” Which one is more fully characterized? Are both characters plausible?…
Arthur Manuel’s Unsettling Canada, A National Wake Up Call is absolutely inspiring and a must read for all Canadians as they go through the discoveries of colonization policies, legislations and unfair treatment of Indigenous land and peoples. This book completely resonated with me as I feel the necessity to settle Indigenous title and rights has been long overdue and the imperative requirement for all to live lightly on the land. Unsettling Canada has substantial value as a pertinent text worth examining based on both past and present grassroots organizations who take action for Indigenous sovereignty and rights.…
1. General Zaroff is not a credible character at all. He is the opposite and beyond evil. General hunts people and calls it a sport. That shows us his negative actions. Secondly General things that its alright for him to destroy the weak for his own pleasure. As he states “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and if need be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong why should I not use my gift” that clearly implies that he wants pleasure from another persons pain. Last but not least When Rainsford escaped from the General he was mad, General was hoping to kill him.” Two slight annoyances kept him from perfect enjoyment. One was the thought that it would be difficult to replace Ivan, the other was that his quarry had escaped him” That also implies that he only cares about replacing his servants and having someone do things for him. General also created an island called “The Ship Trap” where giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws can crush a ship easily. The island is his trap for his hunt. Situations like this could unfold in today’s society for example people having too much greed and jealous and that can lead them going out of their way doing evil things to get what they want. For an example if there was an island with humans and no animals and we were starving I’m pretty sure we would hunt and kill the human and make them our meal. “…
"The Most Dangerous Game", by Richard Cornell was a story which Mr.Cornell used 8 aspects of fiction to show his point of view that one who has intellect can overcome one who has intelligence or instinct. The character's used in the story gave the author a way to make his point of view come clear to his audience. The story uses sequence of events. The plot is how the story goes about. The setting is the surroundings of the story, or where it takes place. The suspense is the temporary holding of the information to keep the reading interested, and to keep the reader guessing and wanting to know what will happen so they will continue reading your story. Foreshadowing is the readers way of telling the future', in other words the writer is giving clues out to the reader so that the reader can produce a hypothesis of what will happen, usually the reader is right, it's like suspense, when the reader wants to find out if he is right or wrong, it keeps the reader interested. Fantasy is when the reader suspends his disbelief in the story in order to enjoy the work of fiction, in other words the reader just stops disbelieving that some of the things in the story are impossible, and cannot happen. Images are symbols used by the author to reflect the point of view. These 8 aspects of fiction were used by Richard Cornell, in the, "Most Dangerous Game", to reveal his point of view that one who has intellect can overcome one who has intelligence or instinct.…
