In this instance, David simply had difficulty fastening his jacket/shirt with both hands and wished out loud what life would be like with three hands and the fact that this third hand will greatly assist him. He meant no malice however, his father, Joseph Strorm was not impressed and thought David’s thoughts and words were obscene and a curse to God because to Joseph, wishing for anything that was not the norm was a curse. Joseph made his son kneel in prayer immediately and ask for forgiveness of their sins. Others in their presence also knelt in prayer out of fear. He could not believe his son wished to be a Mutant something detestable by God.
This paragraph helped me to understand how seriously the people in Waknuk took religion and that they did not even entertain the thought of what they deemed imperfection. They lived very strict lives and by the book without any sort of deviation. Joseph Strorm was also particularly very hard on his son David. Though he told his sister Mary about his dreams in Chapter 1 he never revealed his full abilities or that of the others to her. Mary dismissed him by saying it was all dreams and he should not discuss it with anyone else. Uncle Axel was able to win him over and David shared his secret with him. I thought David’s actions demonstrated that of someone who desperately needed a confidant or a father figure as he could not speak to his father on anything that was happening to him because of the tyrant he was towards anyone or anything that seemed abnormal. David did not only tell his uncle about himself but about all the others who were just like him. Earlier David did disclose his cousin Rosalind’s telepathic abilities to his uncle who gave him the same advice Mary did that he should not speak of Rosalind nor her abilities again nor that of Petra’s later in the
